Budget Getaways Review
Simple elegance framed by postcard views down the Franschhoek Valley pretty much sums up Courchevel Cottage.
What's more, this rustic-romantic little hideaway sits on the rim of the Chamonix estate vineyards. All that's missing from the picture is YOU - a fine specimen slugging back a fine red on the front stoep, Richard Clayderman looping in the background, the admiring glances from your loved one… The scene is all set.
Right, moving away from the fantasy, let's get down to the hard Budget facts. The farm has three rustic-luxury cottages and a honeymoon suite, for those with hearts set on a spot of romance. Each abode is cosy and inviting with the living areas centering around large fireplaces. Vineyard views offer an elegant touch of Provence - we would expect nothing less from the French Quarter.
First up we have Courcheval Cottage, with double and twin bedrooms ensuite. Cosy and inviting, the living area is open-plan to a small kitchen with dining table and centers around a large fireplace. Outside is where the magic kicks in - a comfortable stoep with built-in braai and scenery to choke on. Long sundowners and wors sizzling deep into the night will be the order of your stay.
Scott’s Cottage, named after the champion horse Scott, exudes equal amounts of charm and grace as its namesake once did. Also sleeping four, the open plan kitchen was once Scott’s stable. Decorated in a distinct equine theme, this charming little cottage also sports indoor and outdoor fireplaces and views out over the vineyards.
Die Ou Stal is a two bedroomed converted stables. Both bedrooms are ensuite, with one bathroom decked out with a bath tub offering vineyard vistas. As with the others, you’ve got an open plan living area with fireplace, and outdoor braai ready for sundowners.
Heart of the Horse is the couples choice. Spacious bedroom, sprawling bathroom with bath and shower and stunning views from the patio. A fireplace forms the centre of the open plan living room, and you’ve got a cozy braai area outdoors.
From the farm it's a mere hop to the village centre, making access to the loaded platter of fine eateries and coffee shops a synch.
Wine tasting, mountain biking, walking and running routes galore, trying your luck at trout fishing on the farm dam, a swimming pool at the main homestead, you won't have a moment to dwell on your suburban woes.
A neatly packaged getaway with good attention to detail, awesome outlook, and useful proximity to city and Franschhoek, there doesn't appear much to fault. “A lovely quaint cottage, rustic but comfortable,” is but one satisfied comment. We would tend to agree.
"Courchevel Cottage was the most wonderful find! High up on the mountains overlooking Franschoek providing stunning views of the little town and the mountains near and far. The horses that came to say hello were a delight and it was impressive to walk through their newly built stables that house their champion horses. The cottage is uniquely decorated and the paint effects on all the walls so well done! My boys enjoyed the fishing and were able to hone their fly fishing skills. Sitting around the fireplace in the evening ensured we were warm and toasty! We look forward to a return visit."

"We had a fabulous stay. It was a freezing cold evening but the fireplace and exceptionally warm duvets made for a snug stay. We just loved the dcor and attention to detail."

"Peace and tranquility abound. We stayed in the 'Heart of the Horse' cottage and it was lovely, especially the cosy lounge and fireplace and the attractive, spacious bathroom. Surrounded by mountains and fields with horses on your doorstep. Great views of the village and mountains."

"A very sweet cottage right next to the horse paddock with a very friendly horse for company. My kids were delighted! It's a great getaway not too far from Cape Town, in the mountains yet a short car roll down the hill to the shops, restaurants and wine farms that Franschhoek is famous for. It is very good value for money for this area. The only (small) downsides are that there are no blinds on the windows in the kitchen/lounge area which means it can get quite cold even with a fire going, the loo has saloon doors and the bathroom is open plan to the bedroom, so there's not much privacy and there is limited place for little kids to play within eyesight, as the farm road is just behind the cottage and the paddock is in front. That said, we would definitely be back in spring or even summer. As it's right against the mountains, it is likely not to get as hot as the rest of the valley."

"Excellent Stay and great value. The cottage was spacious, clean and well equipped, it overlooks the whole of Franschoek. We made a spectacular barbeque one evening at the cottage. Sonja suggested we join the picnic at the wine farm and had a fantastic afternoon picnic with a great band playing. We didn't get to hike enough but will definitely do so on our next visit. We will be back for sure."

"It was a lovely setting and the hospitality and service was fantastic. We would have liked a bigger fridge/freezer as we were there for four days. The knobs on the counter top stove were broken off so it was a bit difficult to use. Other than that everything was great!"

"Courchevel Cottage is a magical place. A gorgeous cottage bursting with French pride in a glorious setting, nestled high on the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains in amongst the vines, overlooking the valley with its breathtaking views! An idyllic spot to regenerate my spirit, body and mind and experience a little piece of heaven. A wonderful piece of paradise to watch the sun set over majestic mountains, the feel of the wind, sun and pure earth around you, spectacular views, the smell of lavender, the chickens around the stables, the constant sound of horses hooves. At night under the star painted sky, the absolute silence permeated by the occasional hoot of the resident owl. Last but not least, our constant companions Pinotage and Stella, they made it feel like home. What a worthy escape. I shall miss it but will be back."
