Budget Getaways Review

Dozing among the foothills of the Klein Winterhoek mountains (13km from Tulbagh), Fisaasbos se Huis sounds like your classic thatched farm cottage/house: you know, that archetypal fantasy of ancient oak trees, the sweet smell of thatch, soft views down a long valley, early morning mist lying heavy on the land…

Going on the guest feedback alone, we're awfully tempted to bunk work and head right over. “Just the most unique setting with spectacular views.” “Absolutely fantastic, a food for the soul getaway spot,” are just two of the comments streaming through.

Let's take a look at the nuts and bolts. 1. Location: about 500m from your host's house, meaning privacy in abundance. 2. The house: under old oak trees and lovingly restored. 3. Features: large and spacious layout, three bedrooms under thatch (one ensuite, one with fireplace, and one a kids den with four bunk beds), cement screed floors, Oregon doors, simple but tasteful furnishings and decor.

The kitchen flows off the comfy living area, and is packed with everything from coffee life-support machine to dishwasher - meaning hubby can spend more quality time with the kids while you set off with the girls.

Fisaasbos is an outdoors living kinda place: sprawling lawns (kiddies tent welcome), shady trees for summer siestas, big stoep leading off from the living room, valley and mountain views…

To do? Plenty. Wandering through the orchards; mountain biking and hiking trails, mozing into Tulbagh for a boozy lunch, chased down with a couple of wine farms, before crawling back to the ranch and lighting up the sky with your evening braai.

Our initial gut sense of Fisaasbos? A perfect venue for that family-with-pooch-and-friends holiday.

Guest Reviews

"Fantastic place to stay if you want to get away from the city. Kids and dogs had a wonderful time exploring the area. The house has everything that you need. The mountains were full of snow, so beautiful. We will be back!"

"We had a family get together over a long weekend and Fisaasbos was perfect! The shade under the huge oak trees, the beautiful birds early each morning (made my mother's year), many games of boule on the lawn, afternoon sleeps, a Scrabble championship, lovely walks and relaxing braai's each evening made for a the perfect break. We cannot wait to go back!"

"Die ligging was perfek en die stilte en afsondering hemels. Slegs 10km buite Tulbagh dus naby genoeg as jy iets kort of as jy meer lewe om jou soek. Fasiliteite was uitstekend en silwerskoon. Ek sal definitief weer wil gaan."

"Just the most unique setting with spectacular views, and even more so if you hike a short distance from the house. Trail running is 10-stars. I believe we followed some of a previous Epic mountain bike trail. Quaintest cottage, very well-equipped kitchen and great beds. Worked perfectly for two families. We took lawn games and hammocks and the kids pitched their tent for fun, the yard is just perfect for all. Those are really big acorn trees! The village of Tulbagh is a little known gem with decent restaurants, The best wines, great surprise, musical entertainment at Saronsberg theatre. We also went horse riding. Let's not tell anyone else, shall we?"

"A fantastic getaway, I will have to return to soon!"

"An absolutely fantastic food-for-the-soul getaway spot!"
