Budget Getaways Review

Today a quiet stretch of road, but back in the day, when those chaps in Kimberley were digging that big hole…this was SA’s main drag from Cape Town to diamond country. Times changed, gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand and a railway was built, all contributing to this route becoming known as the forgotten highway.

The Forgotten Highway Guest Farm is a 2000 hectare working sheep and fruit farm, tucked away amongst the hills and slopes enroute to the Tankwa, 30km from Ceres. Here it’s all about wide open spaces, plenty of fresh air and good ol’ country hospitality.

The accommodation on the farm comes in the form of a large farmhouse (Die Plaashuis), and three smaller units, namely Die Woonstel, Die Herdershuis and Die Meulhuis Kamers.

Kicking off with Die Plaashuis, which sleeps eight. This relaxed and authentic farmhouse has three bedrooms, all with either king or twin bed options. The third bedroom has additional bunk beds for kids. The main bedroom is ensuite to a bathroom with shower. The living area has a smart TV, fireplace and opens out onto a full length voorstoep. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering and mod cons include dishwasher, smart TV and WiFi.

Sitting alongside Die Plaashuis is Die Woonstel, a small two-sleeper unit suitable to overflow guests from Die Plaashuis, or a couple. This cottage has twin beds and a bathroom with shower. The kitchen is equipped for all your self-catering needs and there is a fireplace in the living area. WiFi is available in the unit.

Moving along to Die Herdershuis, which also sleeps two in a twin bedroom, this unit is situated roughly 50m from the Die Plaashuis. It too has an equipped kitchen, an indoor fireplace in the living room, as well as an outside braai area and patio. WiFi is available.

Last up is Die Meulhuis Kamers. Ideally suited to a small family, here you have two twin bedrooms, each ensuite to a bathroom (one with shower only, the other with bath and shower). There is an equipped kitchen, a living area with fireplace and an outside braai area. This unit is situated about 100 meters from Die Plaashuis. WiFi is available.

Keeping busy here is a doddle, you’ve got miles of farm roads and trails to explore on foot or by bike. There are some farm dams, which are suitable for swimming, as well as plenty of peace and quiet giving you enough reason just to chill out at your abode.

A real farm experience, within easy reach of the Mother City, along a stretch of road steeped in history. Get out there and explore The Forgotten Highway.

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Plaashuis at Forgotten Highway Guest Farm. The kids (aged 2 to 7 years old) explored every inch of the farm - nothing is off limits at Forgotten Highway. They were enamored by the sheep with their lambs. I think my kid said the word "Baa" about a million times a day! They absolutely loved it!"
