Budget Getaways Review
Neatly tucked away in a lush garden setting within walking distance of the centre of town, Lantern Self Catering Cottages offer two lovely little character cottages, privately positioned and perfect for a night or three as a base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Looking at the general garden setup, the cottages are close to a central swimming pool (there’s no safety net, so toddlers beware) and braai area, which are available for guest use. Both cottages have electric blankets for winter, free firewood for the braai, and a complementary bottle of wine.
Onto the cottages: Thatch Cottage which lives up to its name is a rustic, wonky-walled cape cottage, typical of many found in Swellendam. It is open plan in layout, furnished with antique furnishings, a king-sized bed and an additional single bed. The cottage has a large open-hearth fireplace for winters. There’s a kitchenette for self catering.
At the top end of the property, you’ve got Karoo Cottage, similar in layout to Thatch Cottage, this unit has a queen bed and an additional single bed. There’s a kitchenette for self catering.
Common to both cottages are quality linen and towels, WiFi internet and a kiddies camp cot if required. There’s also off-street parking.
With Swellendam town centre an easy stroll or drive away, getting to restaurants and coffee shops from here is a breeze. The two cottages also make a well-priced base from which to explore the surrounding nature reserves, hiking and mountain biking options and even further afield, down to De Hoop Nature Reserve on the coast, only an hour’s drive.
Neat, tidy and charming, Lantern Self Catering Cottages are an easy-going and well priced base right in the heart of the village.

"What a hidden gem of a place! We stayed in the thatched cottage. The d�cor is antique, very tastefully done. Even though it was cold, the fireplace and gas heater made us warm and added to the ambience. The entertaining area, with the beautiful swimming pool was the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine. The hostess, Gabriela was charming and very helpful. We will definitely be back."

"Karoo cottage was just the perfect spot to spend a couple of nights away from Cape Town. The cottage is cozy and really nicely decorated, beds are comfortable and the place was spotless, we had all we needed! The host replied very promptly and efficiently to our queries. During our stay Gabriela and her family made us feel very welcome in their special place. Our little girls loved the "magical garden", the bunnies and to play with their daughter. We will definitely be back again to enjoy their hospitality and explore Swellendam."
