Situated along the Kowie River banks, six kays outside Port Alfred, Mansfield Game Reserve is a picturesque expanse of Eastern Cape bushveld, with a range of self-catering options and a camp site, which includes camping platforms.
Birdwatching, fishing, boating, game drives in an open Landy, walking and hiking trails, a good spread of wildlife (no predators), Mansfield makes for a great bushveld escape, with the bonus of river right on your doorstep.
The accommodation takes three forms here. Two self-catering abodes, namely, The Lodge and Eagles Nest. These are a good bet for families, with each sleeping six and four, respectively.
The Lodge is a three-bedroomed farmhouse, fully equipped and in a private setting. You've got a swimming pool in the garden, braai area and boma with firepit.
Eagles Nest is a log cabin with gorgeous river views. It's open-plan and equipped, and comes with double bed and two single beds, making it well suited to a small family.
If you're up for a spot of camping, the eight Campsites are shaded and equipped with communal open-air ablutions (with hot water), washing up facilities and braai areas.
The Camping Platforms offer an easier alternative, with a tent, private shower, loo and basin and views over the river all provided. All you need to bring is your bedding and food and catering gear.
Sick of Two-Minute Noodles or yet another boerie roll? In that case give the on-site Black Rock Restaurant a go. It offers basic meals and a kid's playpark with jungle gym, trampoline, rock pool, sandpit and an old Landie for them to work on.
Big on hospitality, big on fun, and big on activities, Mansfield is one of those getaways with something for everyone.
