Budget Getaways Review

Nieuwedam is a near-perfect recipe of Overberg ingredients: A gorgeous Cape Dutch cottage/house with thick, white-washed walls, thatch roof and crooked cottage-pane windows, set on manicured rolling lawns leading down to a 31ha dam - or should we rather say, inland lake.

Checking out the pics, the cottage and setting are superb, tucked away in a quite corner of a 3000ha livestock farm some 30km from Stanford.

This elegantly furnished cottage, with open log beams, Kilim rugs and free-standing bath, sleeps up to six, in two double rooms with Queen beds and one twin room. All linen and towels are included.

A large, farm-style kitchen with gas hob, fridge and microwave makes rustling up your holiday grub a breeze, while a comfy living room looks out over the water.

Slaving over a hot stove not your idea of a weekend away? No problem, you can chill out at the thatched braai boma behind the cottage.

A small annexe building set away from the cottage sleeps a further two guests on single beds, with toilet and shower - not a bad option for the accompanying in-laws.

With trout fishing, canoeing, bird watching, hikes and walks through pristine fynbos and plenty of mountain biking options, you'll have enough excuses for some active moi time. Nearby wine farms, shark cage diving, the options are endless.

Alternatively, if you’re into a weekend away doing absolutely zilch, take a book and a beer and dangle your feet off the jetty that leads out over the dam from the cottage.

While Niewedam may not sport an indoor fireplace (heaters available), thereby best as a summer option, the charm of this venue and its idyllic perch above the dam make it a tough one to resist.

Guest Reviews

"We recently had a wonderful weekend at Nieuwedam with my niece and nephew, the setting is just fantastic and having access to the canoe and kayak was a real bonus. The braai area is lovely but the two outside tables had not been cleaned and were really dirty. One of the braai's had not been cleaned and the second braai had water in it from rain earlier in the week so that could not be used. The jetty does not look like the photograph at the moment and is in need of repair. There are slats missing and broken which makes it quite dangerous. Plants were growing over the entrance to the jetty which means that some of the broken boards could not be seen easily. On our last day we saw a piece of the jetty floating away in the dam. The hot water was also not working correctly, it was lukewarm. We did have a great weekend but some repair and attention is needed."

"My wife and I went with our 2-year old daughter. Even though we had howling wind and pouring rain, we still had a wonderful time at the cottage. The cottage was neat and tidy and well suited for our family or even two families should you wish to take friends with. We will definitely be back again."
