Budget Getaways Review
In a corner of the universe typified by rampant development, the ubiquitous golf estate and sausage-machine B&Bs, the Reitz-owned Ouland Farm is a rare breed - for where else will you find a full-blown working farm that overlooks the ocean and is a mere three (yes, three) minutes to the beach?!
What's more, Ouland Cottage itself is a welcome breather in an overdone Garden Route world of Sandton travertine, corner jacuzzi baths and landscaped-to-death gardens.
The cottage and its attached rondawel is in general setting and interior decor the epitome of uncluttered simplicity. (To cut short our poetic ramblings) what you're getting here is the rural tranquillity of a working farm combined with easy beach and town access. All at a so reasonable price tag.
Enclosed in a private garden with great views, Ouland Cottage can sleep three, with an extra two beds available in the outside rondawel should you need them. The cottage is fully equipped, with an open-plan kitchen, lounge (with fireplace) and sleeping area with separate bathroom. The decor and furnishings are guided by an eye for the minimal, yet harmonious.
To do... no shortage here. Pop over to the fabulous Ouland Royale, the farm's baroque barn-restaurant which sits alongside the cottage and serves a delicious farm breakfast or lunch, topped off with ocean views. Head down (by car or bike) to Robberg Beach for an early morning run and dip. Spend the rest of the morning with Jane Austen on the shaded veranda (soft couch provided), taking in the mountain and ocean views. Fill the afternoon with a long walk, bird watching and fishing or swimming in one of the farm dams. Rush back for a siesta. End the day with a B&B (beer and braai) while watching the sky turn pink over the ocean.
We haven't been there yet and we may be wrong, but we got a feeling that Ouland could be a self-catering gem during high season madness.
"Lovely place with access to a very good restaurant."

"We enjoyed our little cottage. There were a few hiccups out of the owners hands but they handled it really well and tried to sort things out for us. We had everything we needed and enjoyed the close proximity to town. Nothing negative to say. Clean, comfortable and enjoyable."

"We enjoyed our 5 day stay here, being a peaceful country setting yet only minutes from shops and not far from the beach by car. The weather was very cold, but we were provided with firewood and were able to light a fire every evening to keep warm. A heater was also provided. The hosts are very congenial. We would like to stay here again during warmer weather to take advantage of the beautiful beaches in Plett. The cottage has a lovely verandah with a view over farmland and hills. It's a great place for a complete rest from the city."

"Absolutely perfect for our needs - comfortable, pretty, well equipped cottage. Bell and Andre were friendly and welcoming. We definitely want to go back."

"We (three adults) stayed for three nights and enjoyed the farm setting. Great to have the restaurant/coffee bar Ouland Royale nearby. A little noisy early mornings from the Plett airport next door (but good to know it's fully functioning again). Perfect location to miss the Christmas crowds and zip down to Robberg corner for surf, swims and walking the lovely beach."

"Stunning place to get away from it all for the whole family."

"We had the most wonderful wedding at Ouland Royale. It was so convenient to have a comfy bed right there on our wedding night!"

"What a wonderful, peaceful place, no TV, but a beautiful fire in the fireplace and plenty of magazines to browse. We felt completely relaxed and refreshed. Our hosts were most helpful and friendly and we wished we could have extended our stay."

"Very nice cottage, well equipped and a lovely place to stay. Quiet environment, beautiful view from the garden, close to Plettenberg bay and Robberg beach. Due to road works it took a while to find the cottage."

"Very central, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Quiet and private."

"The best of both worlds: set in a laid-back, beautiful micro farm with cows grazing and dams, but within close distance of Robberg Beach and the abundance of fine hikes in the area. The cottage is furnished with style and empathy... We had a brilliant time. Highly recommend."

"We had the most amazing week staying at Ouland Cottage. Just far enough away from Plett itself and very close to the lovely Robberg Beach. The owners are warm, hospitable and have a great attitude. Our two small children loved playing in the large private garden watching the cows and guinea fowl pass by. Lovely walks on the farm itself and the cottage is tastefully kitted out with everything you need."
