Budget Getaways Review
Both Dassieklip Luxury Farm Cottage and De Kom Mountain Cottage have become something of legends on the self-catering map – thanks in no small part to a mix of great setting, attention to detail, and a professional (yet relaxed) host. So successful has this formula proved to be that two further options, called Die Veepos and Stonehaven, have recently joined the duo. Set on a working citrus and rooibos estate just outside Citrusdal, all four cottages are gems.
First off and buried under dappled oaks is Dassieklip, a yuppie dream come true, a place where feet on the furniture, PMS partners and wailing offspring just don’t fit the bill. A Jetmaster, colour TV and hi-fi, aircon, original artwork, an undercover braai area and a shimmering plunge pool, are what you can expect from this cosy cabin that can accommodate up to six guests.
Further up the track and into a secluded geological basin of craggy rock and pristine mountain fynbos, De Kom is the epitome of 'rustic-luxury'. This unique hideaway harmoniously balances hedonistic comfort with Zen design and a respect for all things natural. Terracotta and ochre floors meld gently with cretestoned walls. An open hearth, paraffin lamps, gas and candles imbue the evenings with intimate ambience (there is no electricity). A shady stoep, double-hammock and an enticing ‘Roman’ plunge pool (fed by mountain water) bring welcome respite from the crackling summer days. A path to the back leads up to a wonderful farm dam and a rowing boat for your use.
Crossing over the mountain, Die Veepos is custom-built for a larger group of six. Apart from extra space, the winning rustic-luxury formula has been religiously adhered to: a brilliant secluded setting with long moody views down the valley, rietdak ceilings, cretestoned walls, a big fireplace, sash windows, pigmented cement floors, elegant country furniture (including a brass bed that belonged to Hedley's great grandfather) and other nice touches, an outside shower, an open-air bush bathroom (with Victorian bath!), as well as a plunge pool leading straight off the stoep. Wow!
If this isn't enough, there's the beautiful, the romantic, the private Stonehaven Luxury Cottage. In this case we have an awfully romantic nest for two set high in the mountains with spectacular views over the valley. Naturally Stonehaven has it's own private pool, a fireplace, a double brass bed and... a double bath lit by candlelight and spilling views across the mountains. The the uber-romantic, there is an open air bath set in the bush near the cottage. (Stonehaven is not pet-friendly).
The majority of Petersfield's guests are content to confine their activity to the plunge pools and the braai tongs. However, for those overcome by an inexplicable urge for physical expression, a challenging 4x4 route and several short and longer walks fan out into the surrounding mountains, offering the likelihood of small game and birdlife, including a pair of resident black eagles. No two ways about it, Petersfield is one of those special places where time dissolves and the important things no longer really matter.
"ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. This place is a jewel. We celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary and this is the best breakaway for a couple."

"We had a lovely time at Veepos Cottage. We stayed for a week and everyone, including our dog, had a fantastic time. We made good use of the outside bath and the plunge pool. Loved seeing the dassies on the koppie every afternoon!"

"The environment was absolutely stunning with amazing view of the valley. Our setting was private, relaxed and peaceful, and when we arrived we were provided a warm friendly welcome. After all the chaos of this year it was just what we needed. Thank you for an amazing, blissful time."

"Stonehaven was the perfect birthday getaway for my husband and I. The house is beautifully located, hidden from everyone in the mountains...the outside bath (with hot water) under the stars was a magical experience...the inside bath with a glass of wine in hand and good company was most enjoyable. Then the swimming pool could not have been more welcome - 39 degrees was enough to make me get wrinkly in the pool. We will most definitely be back...maybe even in winter with the indoor fireplace and bath that will make it super cozy despite cold weather outside. The little things make a big difference. I can highly recommend Stonehaven!"

"This spot was perfect for an indulgent weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cottage was beautifully equipped and had such a lovely calm feeling about it. The best part was the outside bath in a secluded spot, perfect for bubbles and star gazing. We didn't see another soul for 48 hours and didn't want to leave when Sunday afternoon rolled around. Highly recommended and already trying to find a way to get back!"

"What a gem hidden away in the mountains, literally! I happen to stumble across this place about two weeks prior to our trip and even though I had doubts about not having cell phone signal (reception at the pool sometimes), TV, or any sort of electricity (you're literally off the grid), this trip was just what my soul needed. Peaceful and tranquil all in one. We were greeted by a troop of baboons - they kept their distance. One morning, some springboks (I think), some hares (I think), and lots of birds. If you're looking to get away from the city life, I'd recommend this place no doubt. Thanks John & Hedley for welcoming us to your wonderful farm. I look forward to visiting again and seeing your dam project complete."

"Having friends who stayed at Petersfield some time ago it had been on my 'to do' list for a while. We chose Stonehaven Cottage as we needed isolation and quiet after a hectic year and this was the first 4 nights of our holiday. We arrived at dusk and were welcomed warmly at the main house reception and given directions to our cottage which was further up the mountain along a farm track, we were very glad we had a high vehicle as I can imagine it might be hard for a regular car, but fortunately it is not too far. Our cottage was Stonehaven which is only for a maximum of two and is solar powered sits half way up the hill and overlooks Citrusdal in the bottom of the valley and the N7. It is extremely well equipped inside and charmingly furnished. We had great weather and so spent most of the time out on the stoop or around the small pool - there are two outsides fire places and we made use of both. We took some short walks up to the tea plantation for exercise and the views which from the top run right across the valley for miles and miles. As load shedding is a topic of conversation in SA at the moment it is worth mentioning at the extremely well designed solar system worked fabulously, much better that we had expected and as Citrusdal was plunged into darkness we sat and looked on surrounded by our lamps and lights. We left there refreshed and ready to continue our holiday. It is worth noting that (wind dependent) there is a little road noise from the N7."

"What an incredibly remote and romantic destination Stonehaven Cottage proved to be! The views over Citrusdal are stunning but we preferred to face the fynbos and mountain views. A totally relaxing getaway, lounger chairs around your own private pool area, no sign of other human beings anywhere, this was Heaven on Earth. And, not advertised, is an outdoor bath amongst rocks and fynbos, what a wonderfully unique sunset / sundowner spot. Not a cheap getaway by Budget Getaways standards, but, for a special occasion, definitely well worth it."

"We could not find fault with this gorgeous place. Romantic, romantic, romantic... fabulous, legendary, chimerical, notional, fanciful, dreamy, vaporous! Just some words from Roget's Thesaurus that describe it for us."

"We have stayed at Veepos before and enjoyed every moment of our stay. There is a great fire place and braai and the outdoor bath was a winner. There was no shortage of wood and everybody was very friendly."

"A great getaway with super walks and a lovely stoep that we simply lived on and braai'd on and breakfasted on and "dopped" on, and imbibed the exceptional peacefulness of the spot. Hosts were unbelievably professional and helpful, especially when I had to pay wages to my staff electronically and due to a connectivity glitch we were facing a strike! Hedley and team came to the rescue with a loan of their laptop and the strike was averted and the weekend was salvaged. Even the dogs howled when we had to go home."

"Stonehaven cottage is honestly one of the best places I have ever stayed in. Loved it!"
(visited April 2014)
"We had a lovely stay at Die Veepos. John was incredibly friendly, the kids and dogs had an amazing time (the outside bath was a particular winner for the kids). We loved having our own private "mini-mountain" for the kids to climb, the cottage was well-equipped and everything was just perfect."
(visited April 2014)
"We had a wonderful stay at De Veepos, a pretty, spacious, tastfully furnished and well equipped cottage. Even the garden was carefully considered and well maintained. The cottage setting is beautiful. I would return there again and again."
(visited April 2008)
"We have stayed twice at De Kom and once now at Die Veepos. Both are awesome! Petersfield is one of our favourite farms to chill out, swim in the dam, hike the mountains and bath under the stars!"
(visited March 2008)
"We had an amazing time at De Kom. It's really the perfect getaway - far away from civilisation. The dogs had a fantastic time and loved swimming in the dam. Book in advance!"
(visited July 2007)
"De Kom was the perfect hideaway from civilisation! It's one of those special places that you don't want to tell others about. Our bull terriers discovered the 'doggy echo' and were in paradise for the weekend. One of the more luxurious getaways featured on Budget Getaway."

"Die beste naweek ooit! Ek kan nie uitgepraat raak oor hoe fantasties alles by Petersfield is nie. Die plek is pragtig versorg en alles is netjies en rustig met 'n hoofletter R! Hierdie is 'n stukkie hemel op aarde en ek kan nie wag vir my volgende besoek nie!"

"We loved the setting and the privacy. Extras like mosquito repellent was provided: very thoughtful. Very clean. The smell of orange blossoms was a treat!"
