Budget Getaways Review
Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it? Because here’s a getaway where you get the whole lot: big mountain views, plenty of fresh air and nature, plus the delights of Hout Bay a mere seven kays down the road.
Phantom Acres nestles on the slopes of Constantiaberg, just off Hout Bay's main artery, with vistas stretching towards Orangekloof Forest and Table Mountain National Park beyond.
Occupying centrestage is the Pool House (sleeps 6-8) - aptly named due to the inviting swimming pool leading off the lounge. With plenty of glass to let in those spectacular views, this spacious double volume features two twin-bedrooms upstairs, both ensuite. Staying upstairs, the lounge comes with sundeck and uninterrupted forest and mountain views.
Downstairs, you'll find the main ensuite bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen that leads onto a covered terrace with braai and dining table and the above-mentioned sparkling pool.
For something a little more compact you have a choice of three cottages: Yellowwod Tree Cabin (sleeps 4), Orangekloof Cottage (sleeps 4) and The Nest (sleeps 3).
Yellowood Tree Cabin and Orangekloof are open-plan log cabins with Queen beds and double bunks in the living area. Each has a small kitchenette. Yellowood could by our estimate be the more romantic of the two: glass roof in the bedroom, a private braai patio, secluded sun deck...
Last up is The Nest, a small self-contained flatlet, with double ensuite bedroom, plus additional single bed in the lounge - the latter being open-plan to the kitchen. Outside you have a garden and braai area.
What with densely forested garden, mountain views and easy access to Hout Bay, Phantom Acres appears to tick the "restorative-hideaway-after-hard-day-on-the-city" box. Like one satisfied guest puts it, “This is a lovely place to come home to after a long day of exploring.”
"Phantom Acres is value for money and their staff are very hospitable and always willing to accommodate and assist where they can, Patti is fantastic!"

"Precious setting and warm and welcoming owners."

"We were a party of 18 from Mauritius, in-laws and four couples with children ranging from 2 to 18 years. We took the whole place (four cottages). The booking process, over the phone and internet was extremely smooth. The property is located in a very nice setting, with views on the surrounding mountains. The cottages are simple, but comfortable and well equipped. From Phantom Acres, all the major attractions of the Cape region are within very easy reach. Patti went out of her way to make our stay a pleasant one. We would definitely highly recommend Phantom Acres for those who want to enjoy a family holiday in quiet surroundings. Last but not least, value for money is unbeatable!"

"Actually I would like to keep this a secret because now it will be much more difficult to find one of the cabins vacant (and we cannot book long in advance because we travel stand by). It feels like coming home and we hope to come again because we love the place and the hospitality. Say hello to Patti and Jenny (from a cold and very wet Holland, wish we were there)."
