Budget Getaways Review

Now here’s a quick and easy escape from another dreary weekend in the burbs.

A mere eight kays from Caledon, on one of the oldest working farms in the Overberg, Piet-my-Vrou is a rustic two-bedroom cottage set well away from the main farmhouse and offering yawing views of the Overberg plains and circling mountains - all from the comfort of your stoep.

Step inside and you’ll find plenty in the way of old-time farm furnishings and understated charm. The main bedroom sports a Queen bed, while the second has four single beds, two of which are bunk beds - perfect for the quadruplets. All come clad in percale linen, with towels thrown into the deal.

The bathroom is shared (bath, shower and separate loo), plus there's an outside shower - brrrrr!

The kitchen and living area are open-plan, with a cozy fireplace warming the tootsies around the dining table.

For the kids there’s TV with DSTV in the living room, for the frazzled folks a covered braai area and chilled stoep.

Activities at Drayton Farm are in no short supply. Pack the haversack and take to a long farm walk; visit the historic mill dating back to the mid-1700’s; send the kids off on an organised farm tour, while you sneak off to the neighboring farm for some fly-fishing. There's even a 4x4 nearby, if that's your thing.

Captain Getaway's verdict: A comfortable, yet relaxed family farm escape within supa-easy striking distance. More importantly, what do Piet-my-Vrou's guests think? “Best place ever!” says one; “Clean and cosy little cottage with great views. Great place to stay for a weekend out of town!” crows another.

Go on then, get packing, you could be sundowning on Piet's stoep before you know it.

Guest Reviews

"What a hidden away gem! The hostsess, Rene-Louise, was stunning. As a welcome gift, she had a warm baked bread, fresh from the oven & rusks for me. She showed such warmth and hospitality. The cottager was rustic, private and equipped for our getaway break. Absolute value for money."

"Very friendly hosts. Clean and cosy little cottage with great views. Great place to stay for a weekend out of town."

"Best place ever! Tried to book it again but was already booked for September 2013."
