Budget Getaways Review
Ever heard of Bereaville? Well, until a few days ago, neither had the uneducated team at Budget Getaways.
It is in fact a nearby suburb of Genadendal, SA's oldest mission station and home to a 'coloured' community. In times past, when wagons and hardened missionaries worked their cause, it was known as Poespasriver (ahem…), in reference to the little river running through the village in a vaguely north-south direction.??
Not much has changed in this neck of the woods; today the only traffic you’re likely to find are loping livestock, a few chickens, colourful local characters, and possibly an intrepid Budget Getaway explorer.
A gentle warning: Before you book, bear in mind that Bereaville (and Genadendal, for that matter) is not Greyton - if it's dozy gentrification you want, then to Greyton you must go. But if you're open to a slightly different cultural experience, then Bereaville could be your kind of place. And Poespasrivier Cottage your kind of base to enjoy it from.
This typical Cape cottage of old forms part of a larger property, with the main house nearby. It has all the makings of a gingerbread house: uneven mud walls, exposed timber beams, a cosy loft, splashes of happy colour, and dollops of creaky old world charm. ??
Bed-wise, you’ve got a double bedroom which leads off from the lounge, and a further two singles tucked in the loft. ??The lounge has a cozy fireplace and is open-plan to a kitchen with fridge and gas hob.??
Now, onto the loo. It’s back to earthy basics here, with a compost toilet in the bathroom (yikes!), along with large shower with a view. No need to panic though, there's also an uithuis with flush loo. ??
Staying outdoors, you’ve got a nice stoep area shaded by vines, comfortable chairs and table, and a lawned garden with braai and views stretching to the surrounding mountains.??
There’s loads to do in the area, from a platter of hiking trails, to miles of quiet gravel roads to explore by car or bike, to the Genadendal museum, to Greyton's varied pleasures. Your friendly host, Angora, is on hand to point you in the right direction. ??
An untrampled country dorp, a character-packed organic cottage with a deliciously naughty name, oodles of local history, Poespasrivier Cottage is your time-travel ticket to the past.
"Lovely, quaint and tranquil. A cute cottage in the Greyton hills, so pretty and a real rest away from the busy city."

"Staying over in a small village was great, the cottage is lovely, very nicely restored, Greyton and its surrounding s are truly beautiful. Genadendal as lots to offer as well, we'll be back."

"Angora and her neighbours were very friendly hosts and we felt very welcome the whole time. It is good to spend some time in a properly rural town and to feel a little bit a part of the community. My favourite bit was when our neighbour told us "people here save a lot on electricity and airtime, we just shout a little louder". We enjoyed the cottage, not quite the same level as some of the site's accommodation but very glad that we stayed there."

"My partner and I just spent my birthday weekend at Poespasrivier cottage. There was a lovely bunch of flowers and a birthday card made by Angora on the table, very welcoming! We thoroughly enjoyed the adorable cottage, the town and the awesome, friendly folk of the village. Nearby Greyton has loads to offer and a visit to the fabulous Searles restaurant is a must. Angora is a wonderful hostess and the info brochures on the history of the cottage is a must read."
