Budget Getaways Review
Gracing the banks of the Breede River about 22km south of Worcester, Rivierplaas is a working farm with a massive expanse of shady green lawn fronting the water.
There are 24 stands, ranging from small and cosy for a couple with hking tent, to bigger numbers for groups or Souf Efricans with the old Jurgens in tow.
Rivierplaas is authentic back-to-basics camping, as none of the sites have electricity. In other words, leave the hair dryer at home, and pack the head torch instead. What Rivierplaas does have is a braai area at every site, two ablution blocks with hot showers, and hard-working flush loos.
For tribal gatherings, there's a communal lapa with braai area and firepit.
The activity platter is more than adequate: swimming in the river, a 'Flying Fox' foefie slide that ends with a splash, tracks and dirt roads around the camp for the kids to ride their bikes, fishing, braaing, hiking, braaing, birdwatching, braaing.
For those forgotten items, there is a small convenience store selling the basics. And if you're really disorganised, meals can also ordered from your friendly hosts.
The initial guest feedback looks all good: “Beautiful, clean camp sites, peaceful surroundings, perfect for children and families, hosts very friendly and accommodating.”
Good enough reason in our books to patch the canvas and hit the N1 to Rivierplaas.
"We had a lovely stay at Rivierplaas despite a spot of rain on both Friday evening and Sunday morning. I enjoyed the fact that it was nice and quiet with not too many campsites taken (seeing as it is in the middle of winter), but I am also looking forward to a visit in summer. The children loved riding their bikes around the farm and exploring. They also loved the play parks and taking a boat ride on the river. We had bug repellent on our exposed skin, but surprisingly still got bitten by gnats and mosquitoes through our clothing. Will come more prepared next time - perhaps citronella lamps lit throughout the day would do the trick."

"We had a wonderful time at Rivierplaas. The three 12 year old boys kept themselves busy non-stop for 3 days, canoeing, rafting, swimming, using the foofie-slide, hiking and playing cricket on the lawn. The buildings of the ablution facilities were rustic but the facilities were excellent, clean and plenty of hot water. The hosts were helpful and friendly. We will definitely go back."

"It is a lovely spot, not to far from CT for a quick and necessary getaway. On the plus side the camp sites are good. Most of them have grass. There is a nice play area for kids. Great swimming and foefie slide. The toilets and donkey system work well. The fact that the getaway is pet friendly can be a bit annoying when the owners call "Come here Fluffy!" at all hours of the day and the dogs can be a bit territorial and scare the kids a bit with how they approach them but that is more an owners problem and responsibility. Bottom line is that I enjoyed myself and would go again. Mozzies are around so Bug-Off should accompany you. The owner is friendly and helpful. Good value for money and makes my list of future camping weekends."

"From the first phone call to inquire until the end of the weekend, everything was fantastic. It was our baby's first camping trip and was just so much fun. One of the best campsites we have been to."

"A fabulous camping spot for humans and dogs. It was very hot so the river was welcome! There are flies and mozzies (it is a farm after all) so go prepared."

"We always enjoy camping at Rivierplaas. Most of the sites are shaded and the facilities are above the norm. Sites vary from really large and secluded to very small and on top of each other. Choose your site carefully. It is also one of the few campsites where it is made very clear that (well-behaved) dogs are welcome. Rivierplaas is one of our favourites."
