Budget Getaways Review

"Peace and tranquility in the city, but not in the city" (as one guest so correctly put it), Rondekuil is a rural island in an ocean of encroaching urban creep. A mere 10 minutes by car from the lipstick and mascara-laden poppies at Tygervalley, it lies among rolling green hills and wide open views of Table Mountain and the Boland peaks. As such it offers a tranquil getaway that's so close, yet so far removed from home.

There are three bed options, all circled by landscaped gardens, all luxurious and attentive to detail, and all geared to a self-pampering weekend. First up for review is the Cape colonial-style Leeulaagde Cottages. Both cottages feature two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a kitchen with granite counters, micro, two-plate stove etc, as well as an indoor barbie. The decor comprises reed ceilings, nice dark colonial furniture and other subtle African textures. Located between the cottages is a sheltered braai area and a pool, providing an excellent space for general communal chilling, while the hubbies shop up a storm at the nearby malls.

Moving along to De Rondawel, with a main ensuite bedroom, plus two comfortable double bedrooms with shared bathroom, this is no ordinary hut. The decor is distinctly African - enhanced by the sweet smell of thatch - with giant four-poster bed taking the piece de resistance. The living and kitchen area is open plan, plus there's a mezzanine level. The kitchen comes well stocked, with oven, micro, fridge etc. A stainless steel braai takes care of your primal urge for charred meat.

For balmy summer days the pool at the main farm house is at your disposal - it also features a braai and thatch lapa. For all the cottages tasty Continental breakfast is available on request (at R60 a head) and pets are welcome by prior arrangement.

So what do ex-Rondekuil guests think? "Five star accommodation in a country/farm atmosphere." "Peaceful, wide open space and close to everything." "Lovely cotton bed linen, great pillows - 10 out of 10 - and VERY comfy beds." There you have it folks!
