Budget Getaways Review
The setting appears idyllic - a picturesque wine farm at the base of the Saronsberg Mountain, just outside of Tulbagh and peppered with 16 guest cottages that have elicited good feedback on that lesser-known online platform called Tripadvisor.
Two such comments… “Simply put, we had a superb stay. The area is beautiful and extremely peaceful and I would love for many other people to experience what we did at Saronsberg.” “Amazing escape ... Our stay at Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages surpassed our expectations.”
Apart from the obvious appeal of the mountain views, rows of twisted grape vines that have garnered a list of awards longer than your arm, the 16-pack of renovated vineyard cottages make for an easy going night or two on a wine estate.
Set amidst rolling fields there's a mix of free-standing and semi-detached units, in combinations of one- and two-bedroom units. We'd say enquire accordingly, depending on your need for privacy.
While the cottages vary in their configuration of bedrooms and bathrooms, common to all are uncluttered modern finishes such as cement-finish counter tops, open beams and dakriet ceilings, open-plan kitchens and living areas, and indoor fireplaces-slash-braais.
Stepping onto the stoep, you’ll find an outside braai area, rolling lawns and jaw-dropping mountain views.
The to-do list at Saronsberg is lengthy and indulgent. Get into the swing of things with a visit to the state-of-the-art tasting room, a contemporary venue that takes swirling-and-swigging to a new level. Follow this with Saronberg's Cellar to view a collection of South African art.
Upping the ante… Grab a copy of the local birdlist and head to the dam; explore the farm roads by foot or bike; try your luck at bass fishing; venture beyond the estate gate and explore the Witzenberg valley, its wine estates, horse riding, restaurants and various trails.
A pretty spot with heaps of beds and wine on tap.
"Die plek was baie mooi gewees en skoon maar al ding wat hulle kort is glas "holders" om n mens se glase op te sit want as n mens dit op die meubels sit gaan die ring merke maak. Dankie Petra."

"We really enjoed our stay. The people and staff was really friendly and gave us a warm welcome. The faculties were fantastic. There was everything we needed and more in the cottage. Most of all we enjoyed the wine tasting. The wines are superb."

"Beautiful place, we loved both the decor in the cottages and the magnificent views all around. One point of annoyance was the bathroom - ours had no bathtub, and the shower had bits of now-too-hot and then-too-cold water."
