Budget Getaways Review
Selah Cottage falls firmly into the 'no-nonsense getaway' category: simple furnishings, low freakout factor when the kids drag their muddy Wellies through the front door, and plenty of good old peace and quiet.
Set on 20ha of open farmland some 7km from Gansbaai, this Cape-style cottage is backed by a large farm dam and mountains on one side, and open fields and distant sea views on the other.
Apart from indulging in sweet little, there's enough to keep you and the fam pretty well occupied for most of the weekend.
The dam is a big drawcard in the summer months; there are a host of walks and mountain bike rides, including a trek to the top of the mountain that's rewarded with a gorgeous view over the coastline; there's the possibility of horse riding on the farm (enquire within); and both Gansbaai and Stanford are up the road.
Looking at your humble abode, Selah can cram in a party of six; there are two bedrooms downstairs (double and twin) and a loft with a pair of single beds. Take note: the bathroom is shared, and linen and towels are not provided, so don't forget to pack these.
The living area is open-plan to the kitchen, with a separate scullery area leading off to the side. Besides couch and dining table, the lounge comes with the added perk of a wood-burning stove.
Through the front door is a covered stoep facing onto the dam - nice spot to set up base and enjoy the views or have a braai. (one bag of wood provided)
Heading further afield, you’ve got plenty in the way of beach just down the road. Uilkraalsmond and its lagoon (and supertube) are two kays away, Pearly Beach is 15km by car, while the delights of Stanford are only 25km up the drag.
Dipping into the guest book we find evidence of satisfied guests: This to-the-point feedback from a New Zealand couple: “Rustic setting. Very peaceful. Lots of space. Beautiful views of mountains, farm land and the ocean.”
Bottom line: a good-value no-frills escape combining farm and coast.
"What a lovely little cottage. If you want a break from the "maddening crowd" this is the ideal venue! Our hosts was extremely gracious and helpful. Always made sure that we had everything we needed. Stunning views of the mountains and ideally situated to do sight-seeing that side of the world. Would recommend sorting out TV reception."

"Warm , homely atmosphere and very Relaxing time spent at Selah Cottage. Kids enjoyed the open expanse and were thrilled at night with the sky views! Another surprise was our host giving us an impromptu horse riding lesson, Christopher was over the moon and I'm a bigger hero than before for it."
