Budget Getaways Review
A stone’s throw (3km) from Stanford itself, and surrounded by fields of fynbos, rolling vineyards and olive groves, the historic Weltevrede Farm is home to Stanford Hills Estate.
On offer at this pet- and child-friendly estate is a sprawling five-bedroomed manor house, four restored labourer cottages that have come a considerable way since their original working roots, and for the budget conscious, a spruced-up parkhome.
First up we have the Manor House. This large Cape-Dutch homestead has five bedrooms and sleeps 11 in total. A fully equipped kitchen, large living room with fireplace and DSTV and an outdoor entertainment area with a swimming pool, make this a good spot for an extended family bash.
Moving on to the cottages, Brunia and Sylvia are overlooked by vineyards and both sleep four. Sylvia has a sleeper couch for a fifth person if you need the extra bed. Both have fully equipped kitchenettes and a bathroom with shower. French doors lead from the lounge onto an open private patio, with a braai and expansive views over the Stanford valley. Linen, towels and firewood are provided. Fireplaces in winter, good red wine close by, what more do you need?!
There's still more - two newly-built units called Oak Chalet (sleeps six) and Pine Chalet (sleeps four). Both come with full-length verandas, outside braai areas and great views over the valley. These spacious units both have two bathrooms and open-plan kitchen/living areas.
If the budget’s tight, fear not, the estate can still be yours to enjoy, with the option of The Trailer, a converted parkhome with a double bedroom and additional bedroom with three bunk style beds for kids only. There's a cozy living room and kitchen, while outdoors the views down the Klein River Valley from the deck and braai area are superb.
As a guest you have free reign over this wine and flower farm and its natural fauna and flora. Take a long stroll, enjoy a dip in a dam (trout fishing available), or pop into Stanford. A visit to the tasting room and picnic area, where you can relax on the lawn looking down onto the Klein River valley is a must. Between August and November you can even book a whale-watching flight, with take-off from the farm’s private airstrip!
"Brunia Cottage needs a little sprucing up and a new shower head, but overall nice, though cold in July! It has a decent fireplace though, heater and hot water bottles which are great. The restaurant is awesome, friendly, relaxed and the red wine a winner. Great weekend."

"This is the second time that we have stayed at Stanford Hills Estate and it did not disappoint. The cottage contains absolutely everything that you need to make you stay a very pleasant one. The Tasting Room restaurant serves really superb well priced breakfast and lunch's (they close at 5pm) and the estate wines are really fabulously moreish. A free wine tasting is included in the cost of the accommodation, a bonus. We love the casual family atmosphere and that kids and dogs are free to run around and do their thing (the kiddies are well catered for with boats to paddle on the small dam, a trampoline and a jungle gym etc). I would highly recommend a visit here to recharge your batteries and we will most certainly be returning again in the near future."

"Beautiful setting, delicious food and wine. Lovely cottage. Enjoyed it. Will be back."

"We stayed in the Captains Roys cabin which is a converted Plet home. It's very basic and was expensive for what you got. Great view over the dam and valley. The floor was wet from rain getting in. The main room has no space for walking around the double bed. Not a place you could stay comfortably in for more than one night"

"Just fabulous and will most certainly be returning. Our beloved pooch loved running wild and understandably she did pick up a few ticks. Excellent wine and food available on the beautiful farm to enjoy."

"Pine chalet is very roomy and well equipped and in a lovely setting, which could have been in Switzerland for the beauty of the mountains. A superb getaway at a bargain price! There is a restaurant and tasting room on the farm and the in-house chef is SO good at it. Very friendly people. The chalet had a gorgeous stove for heating and it came with all the wood one may need, including fire-lighters. We loved being on an export-flower farm/wine producer and olive grower. We loved the dams and the very friendly Ridgebacks. Thank you for a memorable stay."

"First visit was May 2011 - and enjoyed so much that we returned November 2011. There were huge improvements - new shower curtain, new microwave, complimentary tea/coffee, etc. By the way, this is for A Touch of Plaas cottage. Had our 2x4 footed babies with us - they enjoyed it as much as we did. Suitable for couple alone or with baby/toddler and the 4-footeds. Back and front garden enclosed. BACK SOON. Left doors open all night..."

"What a wonderful destination for a weekend away for our two families. The toddlers loved the space to run and explore and were intrigued by the aeroplane! Cottages are exceptionally clean, well stocked and the free firewood was put to excellent use! Lots to do in and around Stanford too."
