Budget Getaways Review
Now, there are Tuscany-meets-Pretoria-by-the-sea 'beach shacks', and then there is Thalassa at One Castle Rock.
This is the real Macoy, folks - your fantasy-made-real timber beach abode perched just meters above the crashing waves.
A quaint clapboard home that ranked among the original timber fishing cottages dotting the stretch of coastline around Simonstown (6km away), Thalassa has been lovingly revived and restored into a stylish beach pad befitting the discerning tastes of your Budget Getaways traveller.
The outlook is superb: nothing but open sea and the distant peaks of the Hottentots Holland unfurling towards Rooiels and onward, while rising up from back of the cottage is one big slab of fynbos-smothered mountain.
Inside, the living and dining area exude relaxed seaside karma via the exposed beams, cottage furniture, quality finishes and happy light streaming through the sash windows.
Leading off from the living area is the outside entertainment deck, where the views get even better and the risk grows of kicking back and doing absolutely nothing except prodding the occasional chop and throwing back yet another bottle of chardonnay.
Sleeping arrangements at Thalassa come in the form of three nicely decorated bedrooms (double, twin and a single), all donned in quality linen, and a shared bathroom with freestanding bath, shower and loo.
It's gonna be hard to drag yourself from Thalassa, but if you manage to do so there's plenty at hand to stay busy. Packing that unused snorkeling gear wouldn't be a bad idea because the cottage sits in the heart of the marine reserve, and its many coves and rock pools. Some decent swimming can also be found a few minutes' walk away at Millers Point and Smitswinkel beach.
Then, of course, there's Cape Point in one direction and Simon's Town and its restaurants, architecture and quirky marine attractions in the other.

What do those who've stayed there think? “Do yourself a favour and stay at Thalassa ... it is simply beautiful.” "I just keep returning for more and more of Thalassa...”
You get the picture.
"A relaxing weekend out of the city with a view over the sea and beaches within walking distance all for a very affordable price."

"This must be one of the best beach cottages around. The out of season rates makes it so much more appealing. We will definitely be back soon!"

"Living as I do in Cape Town it is harder to be impressed by a setting as we are surrounded by stunning natural beauty. This historical, beautifully restored wooden cottage, which overlooks False Bay and Castle Rock and backs onto a broad sweep of dramatic mountains, manages to do just that. I keep returning for more and Thalassa is my first recommendation for overseas visitors wanting to experience the best of our coastal resorts."
