Budget Getaways Review
Sitting in front of that grey screen dreamin' about that idyllic weekend escape? A place where gran and gramps are happy to tag along, where the clan can run free in a lawned garden, where you can sneak out the front door and in true Paleolithic tradition hunt down a wild cappucicno?
The Blue House ticks all the boxes. An historic home in the heart of Stanford, it's spacious, charming and perfectly positioned.
Looking at the lay of the land, the house sleeps a total eight across three bedrooms: a double ensuite, a double with shared bathroom (shower and bath), and a third bedroom with two sets of bunk beds. As such perfect pozzie for two families out for a country jol.
As with your average historic Overberg home, the Blue House is a character-filled affair boasting fat walls, high ceilings and Oregon floors - complemented by an elegant mix of fine linen, Persian rugs and quality furnishings. If your hostess' other two getaways (Lagoon View and The LIttle Farmhouse) are anything to go by, you're in for a treat.
The kitchen is the sociable heartbeat - expect many a vino-fueled philosophical debate around the dining table. Life in the lounge and living room centers around a huge hearth and DSTV.
The long voorstoep is your viewing platform on local life - a lazy migration kicking up the dust along Shortmarket Street, or an afternoon cricket match on Market Square.
Out back there’s a sprawling lawned garden ideal for an afternoon picnic, filled with an assortment of fruit trees, a small pond for frog catching (and releasing), a boulle court and an open-air hot shower.
Past the front door there’s oodles to keep you busy in and around Stanford: country markets, antique shops, a good selection of restaurants, a boat cruise on the Klein River, wine farms, the whales at Hermanus, Birkenhead Brewery, hiking and biking trails along the river edge as well as canoeing options… You really are spoilt for choice.
Our verdict on this one: Uber lekker family country getaway.
"Packed granny, grandpa, kids, dogs etc in the car and headed out to what turned into an amazing stay in a fantastic setting and a stunning house. I cannot recommend this house highly enough."

"We had a really comfortable and enjoyable stay in The Blue House. It's a good place for families - a big garden for the kids to run in, a dishwasher (take note, holiday houses!) and washing machine to make life easy and lots of well-designed communal space to spread out in. Everything was clean and homely-feeling. The location on the village green is perfect - one block away from the little market on Saturday, and about 150m from a fabulous ice cream shop. Highly recommended!"

"We had an amazing time at the Blue House. Exactly what we needed. Great location and perfect braai area! "

"We went here with friends and 2 dogs. It was everything we hoped for - lovely walks with the dogs on the village green and close enough to shops and the great fish cafe. The wood fire was just what was needed as it rained all the days we were there. The garden was walled so the dogs were safely secured. Played games at the large kitchen table. Enough hot water was also much appreciated as there is only one shower. Will definitely be back in summer."

"The Blue House was the perfect cosy getaway for us, our friends with kids (bunkbeds!) and our dogs (ask permission!), with a huge kitchen and back garden for entertaining, and two-seconds away from the high street. Not to mention within walking distance of Mariana's. Will definitely return."

"Had the most incredible stay at The Blue House this weekend. The attention to detail was exemplary, from the fresh eggs and farm milk in the fridge,to the fully stocked fireplace in the lounge. The house is a stones throw to the Saturday morning market, and a few houses down from The Vine, where we had after dinner drinks till late. We loved the house and the town so much, will be back as soon as we can."

"Back for our second stay, loved every minute of it. The Blue House is perfectly positioned with the main street meters away so when the moment arises for a cappuccino there's no stopping you. Highly recommend The Blue House with fantastic facilities for the dogs, and yes even a pond!"

"We stayed there with another couple and my in laws It was a home away from home. We felt welcome and relaxed straight away. So much space and such convenience of being near the Spar without feeling you are in the town center though Natalie is such a nice hostess, she made us feel welcome from the start. There was little things like extra candles and fire lighter put out for us. I wish we could have stayed for longer."

"Fantastic! What a lovely house, we had the most amazing time. The younger kids spend the weekend busy catching tadpoles in the little pond with the nets provided. The dogs loved the garden and running on the field, and the adults relaxed. Only suggestion would be putting some mosquito nets or repellent, there were quite a few at night."

"My family and one other stayed in the Blue House for the long weekend and absolutely loved it. My two most favourite things were the big kitchen table that could have all 8 of us and some friends sitting around it and the sitting on the outside chairs and watching Stanford walk by as I read a book. It feels like you are right inside the village, a part of it rather than a visitor. We will definitely staying again."
