Budget Getaways Review

One house away from the mighty Berg River in Velddrif, The Boathouse incidentally doesn’t get its name from the traditional fishing rigs which bob around on the nearby waterways, but rather from the low slung ceilings in the house which make it feel a little like a ship. Fact is, if you’re pushing 7ft tall, then this getaway could give you a headache, literally.

The house sleeps a maximum of six and all beds are housed in the loft room, which is divvied up into two parts. In one partition you’ll find twin beds, while in the next partition there’s another set of twins and a double bed. Both rooms are interlinked and lead to the staircase going down to ground level. Bathrooms come in the form of an indoor shower and loo, as well as an extra outside loo if needed.

On ground level you’ve got an open plan and fully equipped kitchen with a two plate stove, dishwasher, fridge and washing machine. The lounge has a scattering of couches, a big ol’ dining table and a large indoor braai / fireplace to keep things cozy in winter. If you need your DSTV for the rugga, this can be requested when making your booking.

Head outside into the garden area and you’ve got a braai lapa, private parking for the motor and hey, even Fido gets to come along, the garden is fully enclosed and walled in.

Apart from the obvious canoeing, fishing and boating opportunities on the Berg River, you can amble along the river banks and sample some of the local speciality, “Bokkoms”, a dry fish biltong that you’ll either love or hate. There are art galleries, the Sea Fisheries Museum, bird watching spots a-plenty and Port Owen and its restaurants make for a good wander around on a day visit. There are two kayaks and fishing gear at the house which can be used on request.

A West Coast destination with a laid back vibe, quirky accommodation and a good deal of unique activities to keep you busy, The Boat House has the makings of a fun filled weekend away.
