Budget Getaways Review

This pretty Victorian property retains the same graceful charm when it was built back in the 1820's.

Beautifully restored, and a declared National Monument, much of the restoration work is thanks to well-known and prolific South African novelist, André Brink, who owned the house back in the political heyday 1970's and 80's.

There's a range of B&B rooms on offer - spread between the main house and pleasant gardens. Included on the list are four two-sleeper Garden Rooms, a Family Cottage sleeping four, smaller cottages suited to couples, four-sleeper apartments, and double rooms within the main house.

All the above offer DSTV, private bathrooms, heaters, crisp white linen and tea and coffee.

Trundling into the main house, you'll find a welcoming English-style pub, a lounge and library with fireplace and Norden's restaurant - the latter with tasty SA cuisine and an impressive wine list.

While The Cock House positions itself at the upper echelons of the Budget price bracket, the general upmarket vibe, sense of historic grandeur and centrality makes this a firm favorite for many visiting G-Town.

Guest Reviews

"We spent two nights at the Cock House recently. We had a very pleasant stay and found the staff most helpful and welcoming. Wonderful breakfast as well and will certainly stay there again. We would recommend it to anyone."

"We had three days in Grahamstown and truly enjoyed our stay at The Cock House. The room was spacious and well serviced as well as being very comfortable. The meals were really good to the extent that we had supper at the house each evening. Breakfast was also scrumptious especially the freshly baked banana bread. The staff were exceptionally professional and friendly. We had shows booked at 7pm and the chef was prepared to serve us dinner at 5pm. Thank you for being so accommodating. Will definitely stay there again."
