Budget Getaways Review
A central and convenient base in Cape Town’s leafy Gardens area, VIP Cape Lodge ticks a useful box or two for couples and young families needing an affordable spot to hunker down during their jaunt to the Mother City.
The Swiss-chalet feel lodge is made up of five private, self-catering units, each with own entrance and access to a well established and tranquil garden that's nature's equivalent to a Radox bath at the end of a long day.
You have the pick of a large family unit, two doubles and two singles.
Kicking off with the family unit, there are two bedrooms (with King and Queen bed), an ensuite bathroom with shower, bath and toilet, and a contained kitchen with dining table, microwave, mini stove and fridge. The family unit is located upstairs, with its own balcony.
Moving onto the pair of double units, these are open-plan and feature King beds - nice. Each unit comes prepacked with a kitchenette with fridge, mini-oven and small dining area. The ensuite bathroom is with shower only.
Last up, the two single units also have have equipped kitchenettes, ensuite bathrooms with showers and a small dining area. Both feature two single beds.
Telly with local channels, tea and coffee-making facilities, a games room with pool table and table tennis, an outside braai area, and even a sauna, are standard fare at VIP.
Besides the above convenience, you needn’t worry about your chariot, as the lodge has secure off-street parking - not to mention Nala the well-fed labrador.
The guest feedback for VIP Cape Lodge pretty much sums it up. “I enjoyed my stay. The lodge is conveniently situated close to town and it has easy access to transport,” says one happy traveller. “I especially like the little touches. It's peaceful and cosy, and once in, no one wants to leave again!” says another from the northern climes.
If you’re heading to Cape Town and want a comfy backpackers alternative, we'd say you're safe grabbing a suite at VIP.
"We had a comfortable stay in the city bowl. Our host was great and accommodating. Will go there again."

"We had a wonderful, too short stay, Irene was amazing, the place, serene. The perfect hideaway, from everyone and everything, so close to the mountain with just a hint of German influence, and, of course, Nala."
