Budget Getaways Review
Lying 5km from Citrusdal, in the foothills of the Cederberg, Wolfkop is a 450ha reserve featuring views across the Oliphants River valley, a platter of outdoor activities, and comfortable accommodation.
Occupying centre-stage is Wolfkop Guesthouse, a spacious five- bedroomed abode offering B&B rooms during the week, and the entire house over weekends, whether on a B&B or self-catering basis.
Taking a closer squizz, all five rooms are ensuite (with both indoor and outdoor hot showers), and have comfortable Queen-size beds (twins on request) draped in percale linen. DSTV and air-con also come standard.
The rooms open out via double French doors to a covered patio with soft views over the valley.
Stepping into the lounge area, this has high ceilings, deep siesta-inducing sofas, and an open fireplace to accompany that fine glass of plonk in winter.
Double doors lead to a terrace fitted with hammocks and lantern-lit jacuzzi (additional cost), while at the back of the house there's a jungle-gym for the kid in you.
The kitchen is open-plan and well equipped with stainless steel cooking ware. Fresh orange juice in season, coffee beans and grinder are among the nice touches.
If you decide to opt for breakfast, both full English and lighter versions are on the menu.
While us hedonist types at Budget Getaways will be hard pressed to leave the hammock, there's a lot to do. If you get up early (fat chance!) you could spot a variety of animal life, from duikers to porcupine and tortoises. You may even stumble across leopard spoor (or the real thing…).
Depending on the time of year, there are various flowers in bloom - make sure you get there in August and September for the classic psychedelic daisy displays.
Hiking and mountain bike trails, fishing in the dam or river, canoe hire, San bushman paintings, mind-boggling rock formations, diverse fynbos, it's all to be had at Wolfkop.
And then there's the wider Cederberg Wilderness Area and Citrusdal itself - not exactly a metropolis, the dorp does have a good steakhouse called Die Sitrus (naturally), a decent coffee shop by day, and muscle-soothing hotsprings at The Baths (about 25km out of town).
"We stayed at the Wolfkop bushcamp while attending a wedding in the area. We called it glamping (glamour camping) because it combined the intimate setting of this serene river camp with some awesome conveniences including electricity, all the braai and kitchen utensils and quite a few important other small things. (My wife could blow dry her hair). It is rough enough though so you get the feeling of being with the earth. My highlight moment was waking up in the morning and going for a swim in the river, 8 metres away, with morning light and reflecting, calm water. My friend said, "Now THIS, is a bush camp. They found a section of bush and put a camp on it"."

"Wolfkop's Guesthouse, Harpius House Cottage, is incredible. A great escape for a group of friends or for an intimate getaway. The views are never-ending, the house is spacious and I love the big windows and doors that open up onto the long patio. To wake to freshly picked oranges being juiced, coffee being brewed and farm bread being toasted is the a perfect way to start the day, especially if you ended the night before with a bottle of wine in the jacuzzi. There's lots of nature to explore, try the hike or explore the fynbos and keep your eyes peeled for all the critters and creatures that live inside the reserve."
