Budget Getaways Review

If you’re the rugged River Runs Through It type, you’ll know what a Woolly Bugger is. No? Not to worry, you're not alone... After a spot of Googling, we discovered it's a a fly hook with a distinctly woolly look to it.

Right, Fly-fishing 101 out the way, let's move on...

By no means aimed solely at the fisherman, Woolly Bugger is an all round getaway. From Tripadvisor: “What a great getaway.” “You really feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.” “Wet but wonderful.”

Set on a 270ha estate, there are a series of hiking trails, trout fishing dams, mountain bike routes and some resident red hartebeest and blesbok adding to the appeal.

Awaiting your arrival are four, what look like pretty gorgeous stone cottages, each with appealing setting and plenty privacy.

Ginger Quill
and Blue Dunn are well suited to families or two couples sharing. Each sleeps four in two double bedrooms, with the option of additional beds in the form of bunks or double sleeper couches in the living rooms.

Sedgehog Cottage sports a double room downstairs and a loft room on a mezzanine level. Folding glass doors open the cottage to a soothing view over the dams.

Half Hog Cottage is for the romantics, with a double bed and open-plan layout. This little number gazes over dams - a view that can be enjoyed from comfort of your boudoir.

Common to all are fireplaces, quality linen, towels, equipped kitchens and a large dollop of charm.

Action is in no short supply at Woolly Bugger, with hiking, biking, a 4x4 course, archery (bows available for hire), fishing (rods available for hire) and a treasure hunt course for the kids.

Well worth the trek is a hike or drive up to Big Rock, commonly known as “Top of the World”.

Off the farm, in nearby Tonteldoos village, you’ll find The Barn for tea and coffee, Planter’s Pub, and a cheese shop.

Gobsmacking setting, charming cottages, plenty to keep you and the team busy, Woolly Bugger is a sure Dullstroom bet.

Guest Reviews

"What a lovely, quaint and non-pretentious place. Had everything we needed, was comfortable, clean, friendly- a beautiful farm and being dog friendly was fantastic. Will definitely be back."

"Thanks for a great time. The place is fabulous and we will definitely recommend it to friends."

"Friendly relaxed environment. Kids loved the open space - the treasure hunt, archery, long walks. It was great that we could take our little Yorkie on long walks leash free! Do not take the road from Dullstroom - very poor condition."

"We had the most amazing time at the farm. The place was absolutely gorgeous, Angela and Jono were so accommodating and the guest house was beautiful. We stayed in the Ginger Quill cottage and Sedgehog and they were both great. Fully equipped with everything we needed and more! Thank you so much for a relaxing and very beautiful weekend away!"
