Dullstroom Snapshot
A combination of high altitude climate, rolling grassland and fly-fishing has made Dullstroom a perennial favorite among Gautengers hunting down a combo of crisp country air and the perfect catch. Established by Dutch settlers in the mid-1800’s, most of the original village was destroyed during the Boer War. While fly-fishing is today the main lure, hiking, biking and horse riding and other outdoorsy activity are also options. Set behind the weekend 4X4 convoys is a scattering of coffee shops, eateries, and 'traditional' English pubs with blazing fires in winter. There’s even an old-fashioned sweet shop, where your kids can sugar-up with gobstoppers and humbugs from an assortment of glass jars on display. Dullstroom's combo of temperate climate and country vibe gives it 'worthwhile weekend jaunt' status for both the fisherman and his widow.
Things To Do
Try your luck at the two Dullstroom Dams - both well stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Fishing permits are available from any angling shop on the main road, as are tackle and fishing rods for hire.
Explore the surrounding countryside on horseback with the Dullstroom Riding Centre; one to two hour outrides are on offer, as are hand-led pony rides for the kids.
Stop in for a wee dram at Wild About Whiskey, a well stocked whiskey bar run by a trio of fanatical whiskey connoisseurs. A huge selection of single malts await.
Join the weekend crowds and watch established local artist Branko Dimitrov speedpaint head and shoulder portraits of his willing sitters.
Take in a pint or three at the Anvil Ale House, on the outskirts of town; a selection of locally brewed ales and light meals (including smoked trout and scrambled egg), are on the menu.
