Budget Getaways Review
An 11ha farm just outside Franschhoek, Bo La Motte has historically always been a reliable bet for families.
Although considerably spruced up since the old days the general ambience is still of an easygoing Old MacDonald type of escape like grandma used to make, with ducks, chickens, friendly dogs and dams aplenty.
Bo La Motte has five 4-star graded cottages in a shady dappled setting of oaks, vines and roses: Oak (sleeps two) is the smallest, Pear, Goose and Milkwood all sleep four guests and are therefore well suited to families or two couples on a Winelands jaunt.
The cottages are best described as rustic-luxury, featuring a homely blend of the traditional and more modern - terracotta or timber floors, beam ceilings, decent linen, deep comfy couches, functional kitchens and clean bathrooms.
All have a TV and fireplace, as well as a private braai area. What’s more, they are serviced daily, which means you can leap out of bed without the usual existential dilemma of should-I-or-shouldn't-I-make-it.
You won't be going to Bo La Motte for a complete escape from humanity as the cottages and main house form a fairly close-knit group around the communal swimming pool, jungle gym and green lawns. This said, there is more than enough space for peaceful coexistence.
A gate at the back of the farm leads up to six picturesque dams and several picnic spots under willow trees crammed with weaver birds. The dams offer swimming, bass and trout fishing. The farm itself also has more than enough space to stretch the legs.
Out the front gate it's a two-minute drive or a 10-minute walk into the village - in other words, you've got the best of all worlds here.
Pricewise, you're looking at over R300pp a night - and that's based on full occupancy. However, for a town where the Rand is less popular than young Julius Malema at an AWB braai, you're getting a decent deal.
For families or tourists seeking an alternative to a stodgy guesthouse, Bo La Motte is a great option.

"Die weer was wak, koud met baie reen. Die verblyf was warm en heerlik. Ons kon ongelukkig nie die plaas en dorpie goed ondersoek nie. Die chalet is baie goed toegerus, redelik ruim en alles werk goed. Die stofie was baie welkom en effektief in die weer, die TV bietjie klein."

"We came here for Christmas, expecting a rural idyll in walking distance of outstanding food and wine. In all these respects it exceeded our expectations. It is a truly wonderful location at the top of the valley surrounded by hills, lakes to swim in, and wonderfully quiet. Franschoek had grown a lot since we were there twelve years ago, but it is still a lovely place, and the possibility of eating and drinking really, really well is massive. The cottage we stayed in was in a great location, very well equipped, a real home from home. Everyone was really friendly without being intrusive. We were really sad to leave, and cannot wait to go back."

"Very relaxing, picturesque and romantic setting. We loved it!! Awesome in winter, curling up in front of the fire place. The dogs are very cute and friendly. My over all rating would be 5-stars though if it weren't for the dogs waking us up early every morning!"

"We had a wonderful weekend at Oak Cottage! Every need was considered and the cottage was very comfortable, clean and close to restaurants, but far enough away to feel like a proper, relaxing getaway. The cottage was even tidied and bed made in the morning, so we came back after a day of wine tasting to a neat cosy cottage and had a braai with a view of the vineyard. Bliss."

"Spacious cottage attached to the main house. Comfortable with great views ad easy access to the village."

"Spent a week at Bo La Motte with my family in 'Milkwood Cottage' and Oak Cottage. We had an absolutely wonderful time on the farm and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys peace and tranquillity surrounded by magnificent scenery. The cottages are very well stocked and the owners and staff are friendly and helpful."

"We've stayed at Bo La Motte once or twice a year for the past 4 years now. It's gorgeous. The hosts are warm, friendly and helpful but they still leave us to do our own thing - they really get the balance just right! The cottages have everything we need without being overfussy... not a frill in sight. All neutral, spotless and comfortably modern. The setting for the cottages is private without being lonely and most of them have gorgeous views. In summary, it's pretty perfect."
