Budget Getaways Review

Cederberg Cottages lie more or less midpoint between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam off the bumpety-bump dirt road to Algeria in the Cederberg.

The road leading up to this farm cottage bids a pleasant welcome: unperturbed sheep, horses and goats tugging at short tufts of grass, a frisky ostrich loping alongside a barbed wire fence, ducks interested in little but the next tasty morsel, and old crumbly farm buildings turning the colour of dust.

The farm has four bed options: The Annex (sleeps 8), Die Kliphuis (attached to Annex and sleeps 4), Cederberg Cottage (sleeps 4) and Cederberg Chalet (sleeps 2 adults and 2 children). As it's been some time since our lazy boss visited this neck of the woods, we can only pass authoritative comment on Cederberg Cottage; though our feeling is the other units fit a similar mould - as these things tend to do.

Cederberg Cottage is as pleasantly appointed as its approach. A renovated 150-year-old farm building, it sits alone with a scenic outlook across a narrow valley rising steeply on the far side to a rocky ridge. Directly to the front of the cottage is a blue plunge pool, while to the left beautiful pink lilies bob gently on a pond.

Again, based on our direct experience and looking at the updated pics the general decor and furnishing are simple and practical and in keeping with a weekend in the craggy Cederberg. All linen is provided, but no towels. There's also the option of ordering breakfast.

The overall package is simple and uncluttered and suited to balmy summer weekends. In the words of your host Marie: "Not too polished that you're afraid to walk through with your tekkies, not too budget to be afraid of what's behind the couch." Nicely put, Marie!

If you can drag yourself away from the stoep, the farm attractions include a varied bird and animal life and the 13km Ribbok Trail – taking in rock formations, a mountain spring and long views towards Vredendal – that can be hiked, cycled with effort or navigated in the comfort of your 4x4.

An authentic salt-of-the-earth Cederberg experience.
