Budget Getaways Review
Draped along the picturesque banks of the Groot River, this appealing 'rest camp' is part and parcel of the Tsitsikamma National Park. A very pleasant 45-stand campsite and 10 Forest Huts tucked under indigenous trees along the water's edge, are available. Cute, cosy and rustic, the Forest Huts are timber A-frame nests built for two. Each is equipped with single beds covered in duvets, tea-making facilities, a single power point, candles, soap and other odds and ends for a relaxed stay. Take note: that the huts do not have their own kitchen and ablution facilities – these are shared with your fellow campers. From your bed, glass doors open to a compact deck, a private braai area and your canoe mooring – Robinson Crusoe, here we come! Across the way, green hills of indigenous forest rise up from the river. While the Forest Huts are spaced adequately apart (about 20m), some may find the adjacent campsite just a little close for comfort. The general lure lies in the setting – as the Rough Guide so rightly states, "there are no shops, no swimming pools, no wheelchair ramps, just pure unadulterated nature." There is also plenty in the way of water activity so either bring your own canoe or hire one, as we reckon this should be your mode of transport during your stay. The lagoon proper is a short paddle away, as is the beach. For a rustic holiday in Mother Nature's cosy bosom, you can't hope for much more.
"I have camped here a few times and on our last visit we stayed in one of the forest cabins. Although the facilities are basic, we are always impressed by how clean and tidy everything is and how enchanting the setting. The camping sites are set amongst the trees and, if you go at the right time, you can get a quiet spot secluded from others. The forest cabins are set on the water and are nicely spread so you do not see another cabin, so seem totally private and secluded. We always feel refreshed and revived after a visit here... The only warning we can give is: when camping make sure to pack everything away or the baboons will be sure to get to it. When staying in the cabins be wary of the monkeys... we were literally "held prisoner" by a few who wanted to get to our food and bombarded our cabin for about half an hour! :)"

"What a lovely Easter weekend spent in a forest hut in the camp. Absolutely beautifully kept, with ablutions cleaned constantly. Always hot water, and space in fridge and freezer. Didn't lack for anything. Friendly service. Most impressed and hope to revisit. Well done! We can be justly proud of our National Parks. Keep it up!"

"This place is great! Well worth the drive up from Cape Town. Went away for two nights here with my girlfriend. We stayed in a forest hut which is very basic but it is worth the extra 40 odd rand more than camping. Our hut was set right on the lagoon, so if you had a canoe you could have launched it from your doorstep. We rented one from the place for R12/hour and had a great time with it. The walks in the forest were idyllic and it's only about 30 mins drive from Plett if you need supplies. Otherwise there is a little shop and restaurant just 2km away. The people were friendly and the ablutions were very clean and the showers were always hot. I cannot recommend this enough. Just make sure you book and note that you will have to pay R15/day in park fees if you don' have a wild card. Two thumbs up :-)"
