Budget Getaways Review
Lying 15km from Arniston and 16km from Bredasdorp, this working farm is a pretty picture of rolling Overberg countryside, with associated big views typical of the area.
In the midst of this pastoral scene is the recently renovated Rietfontein Cottage, an appealing little number with roughly plastered walls, timber floors, solar power, and general salt-of-the-earth farm vibe.
Nicely suited to a small family, the cottage has a main bedroom with Queen bed and a second room with twin beds, both decked out in crisp white linen and light colours.
The living area is equally appealing, with comfortable couches, a small dining table and two extra single beds to capture any overflow. Timber floors and a built-in fireplace add to the overall charm.
Leading off from here you’ll find the equipped kitchen and the bathroom, which sports a free-standing bath and shower.
Step onto the covered voorstoep, this flows onto a newly planted lawn and garden area - which will need a little time to establish itself.
While you run around to your heart's content, the kids can chill out on the stoep with a good book. (Err, something wrong here…) During your stay you might even receive a visit from an eland, springbok or ostrich.
Rietfontein comes with a pack of outdoor action you’d expect from an Overberg farm. Plenty of farm walks, mountain bike routes, bird watching at the farm dam (a few hundred meters away), and a dip in same.
A mere hop from Arniston, Bredasdorp, Struisbaai and De Hoop, there’s plenty scope for a day trip.
A well-presented little package, just waiting to be enjoyed.
"We really had a wonderful time, it was a break away from our busy life. It was so peaceful, relaxing and just what we needed - it was awesome!"

"The owners of Rietfontein take great pride in their cottage, it was so clean and in very good condition, even though it was very rustic. You got exactly what you were expecting. A very relaxing back to basics stay. We thoroughly enjoyed it."

"This place is just stunning. We loved all the attention to detail and the fact that the cottage is totally off the grid in terms of being eco-friendly. A perfect spot as an alternative to staying in Arniston."

"Suffice to say that Rietfontein Cottage is a gem. It is fully equipped to make your stay comfortable. The tranquility of the farm and vast open space is food for the soul. We are going back there as soon as possible!"

"Wonderful! The cottage is pretty, well equipped & has everything you need - comfy beds, cosy fireplace. The setting is fantastic - so tranquil. It was just us and the animals. Amazing. We will definitely be back."

"We loved the relaxed feel of the farm cottage. Cecelia was lovely and helpful but we loved that we were left to enjoy the place for ourselves. The kids were crazy about the farm and we will definitely be back. It must be said that we now have absolute trust in the accommodation on the Budget Getaways website. You guys pick some great spots that are unique but also of a good standard."

"We arrived after dark and after travelling 4km down a not-so-good dirt road (if has recently rained and we were driving a little hatchback) we found the cottage behind the farm stores. It was beautiful and spacious, elegantly furnished with all the necessary items. But if you do visit the cottage in winter, note the following: due to the use of solar power only you cannot use a heater, electric blanket, electric hot water bottle, hair dryer or toaster (unless you switch on the generator- but who wants to do that when you've come to experience the quietness of farm life??). So start a fire immediately, pour a glass of red and settle in before the fire (and remember to pack your hot water bottle!). The cold winter days are beautiful, soft sun, bright skies; wished we could say one more day. Looking forward to visiting the cottage in summer."

"The setting is fantastic and the cottage is well equipped. We did have a problem finding the keys and getting into the premises (the directions could be more detailed) but once I had phoned for clarification all was fine. We really enjoyed our two nights and would return without hesitating."

"What a wonderful, restful weekend! Beautiful, clean & cosy little cottage. We had everything that we needed, however, it is also just enough to make you appreciate how simple things could be and that you don't need a lot to make you feel happy and relaxed. The big fenced-off area around the house meant a huge play area for the boys, while the parents could relax on the stoep with a glass of wine. Will recommend it for sure."

"Quiet, peaceful, basic but comfortable. Owners helpful and pleasant. The black flies (seasonal) are a pest so be advised to take insect repellent."

"If one wants to get away from everything, this is the place to go. Peace and quiet, starry nights and a paradise for bird watchers. This was perhaps the best holiday cottage that I have ever stayed in."
(visited December 2014)
"A beautiful setting, comfortable beds, well equipped. One can "hear" the silence at night. Our one regret is that we could only stay one night, but we at least managed to delay our departure and spend half of the following day lazing around and enjoying the surroundings. We will most definitely return with friends at a later date for a longer stay. Highly recommended."

"It was more than I expected and we absolutely loved our stay. The fresh flowers were a nice touch, and it had a homely feel about it."

"Arrived in the dark and had to grope around to find the Solar Power switch so that we could have electricity and light. Next day we had no hot water to shower as both gas bottles were empty. Besides those two issues, I loved the ambiance of the cottage and the comfort."

Getaway Reply
"Hi Ursula, sorry for any discomfort, kind regards, Cecilia."

"Thanks for a wonderful stay. The peace and tranquility was such a blessing coming from the busy city environment. I like the eco-friendly self-sustained cottage i.e. solar-power and gas appliances, something which I'd like to implement at home. We managed to visit the coastal towns of Arniston, Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas, which added to the awesomeness of our holiday. A definite recommend."
