Budget Getaways Review
Short of dossing down on the beach, you're not going to get much closer to the ocean than Thallassa Seaside Cottage. With a stretch of open lawn and a short path down to Draad Baai (a tranquil little bay in front of the house), Thallassa is your quintessential seaside getaway.
Tucked in a quiet and open area of Betty’s Bay, this sunny, laid-back, no-frills beach cottage comfortably sleeps five adults, with an additional two beds suited to kids. While Thallassa has electricity, it's back to oil lamps and gas cooking, as there is no overhead lighting...so enjoy the cosy glow of a seaside night from days of old.
On ground level you’ll find two double rooms and a shared bathroom, while upstairs there's an open-plan sleeping area with a three-quarter and double bed - again, ideal for a kid bunkdown. An additional loo and shower can also be found on this level.
The upstairs living room is spacious and light-filled, thanks to a bank of loft windows. The lounge is equipped with a scattering of comfy couches and is open-plan to the kitchen and dining area with its 12-seater dining table. If you’re looking for the TV... don’t bother, the ocean views from up here are better than anything Multichoice has to offer.
Large ocean-facing windows and sliding doors open to a timber-deck balcony. We can think of worse things than kicking back here with a good book, while casting a beady eye on the kids on the rocks below.
For a change of scenery, family excursions to Silversands Beach (half a kay) and Main Beach (4km) are well worth it. There are also plenty of good fishing spots close to the house, mountain bike and running routes are in good supply, as are walks up in the nearby Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Further afield you’ve got the Kleinmond and Hermanus to keep you entertained.
But, as one guest suggests, with a location like this, there’s little need to break away from Thallassa. “Being so close to the sea is nothing but refreshing.”
Just what you've been looking for, no?
"The place is lovely and clean. It doesn't have that "closed up aftermath fire smell". It was spotless and everything we could possibly need was there. Beautiful views. Only thing - the place ran out of gas after 1 night, and that meant no shower Saturday evening or Sunday morning. But it is safe as houses for kids / teenagers to meander . Thank you so much."

"We enjoyed our stay and the cottage. The costing should be per cottage not per person. We stayed at peak time over Easter so we expected the rate. One couple stayed one night all other visitors were day trips. I would give 3.5 stars. It was a peaceful and good Easter break. A tip though, some new grids would be great, and the braai needs wind protection and a cover of sorts."

"What a beautiful little gem that you would really rather keep secret. Stayed there in March 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful views from the balcony but even from the couches inside, pleasant just to sit in comfort while the wind howled outside. Incredibly clean, neat and tidy, plenty of utensils and crockery for all our needs. Later realised that it must be sourced from the "Potter" on the main road so was also able to purchase from there. Little touches fresh flowers and a jar of toffees made it even more homely. The design of the house maximises the lighting. The dogs loved being outside on the grass while we watched them from the balcony. Will be back."

"The proximity and view of the sea (waves constantly breaking over the rocks, small tranquil bay as part of the perfect picture), made the weekend a great one for us."

"Thallassa was our home away from home for the weekend and we enjoyed every moment spent there. The huge windows allowing for endless awesome views of the sea as well as stars and moon at night was amazing. The kids enjoyed the endless supply of toys and games and books. The softest towels and bedding made it feel like our bit of heaven away from the busy lifestyle. Being able to escape to the beach and splash in the sea so close by was marvelous. The kids were amazed at the penguins sanctuary so close by. We loved i and will definitely be back."

"Really everything it's said to be and more, and importantly the effort to maintain such a high standard to detail at a seaside cottage subjected to the harsh marine elements is really appreciated. It all adds up to a desire to get back there as soon as possible."

"Absolutely amazing setting. Perfect getaway spot. Would go back time and time again."

"The view of the bay from the deck on Saturday morning which I was treated to was absolutely idyllic. The venue is an absolute treat for those who appreciate tasteful decoration, tranquility and close proximity to the beach. Really enjoyed my stay, will be back for more."

"A perfect place to unwind for an extended weekend without having to travel far from home. Our young kids loved having the freedom to explore the garden and little bay on their own. The house is well equipped and comfortable, with enough space so that we didn't get under each others feet, even on a rainy day. The chocolate biscuits were a bonus!"

"Fantastic place, warm and homely, comfortable, very clean. Peaceful beach right in front of you. Listen to the waves every night. Take a bath with a view! Attention to detail is great, you won't find empty salt and pepper or sugar pots. Lovely flowers in the kitchen, and a bottle of wine left for us. Perfect winter getaway."
(visited June 2014)
"Amazing views from a great open-plan living/kitchen area. Nothing in front of you but rocks and sea, and a couple of minutes walk to the beach. Perfect."
(visited May 2014)
"There are some steep stairs so wouldn't be appropriate for young children or those with difficulty in walking. It's location is also difficult to find. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return."

"Being so close to the sea is refreshing. The house has everything you need and being without TV is just what was necessary to really relax with a book on the deck overlooking the ocean."
