Budget Getaways Review
A mere 2km from Barrydale and tucked into a corner of the Langeberg foothills that incorporates a chunk of the scenic Tradouw Pass, Bronze Grove Farm will appeal to couples and families looking for an exclusive self-catering escape.
River Ikhaya (sleeps 2), River Indlu (sleeps 4) and Kumba Cottage (sleeps 4) are secluded and tranquil, with either direct river frontage or views over the dam and olive groves.
For the romantic couple, River Ikhaya is the way to go. The chalet is open-plan and decorated in subtle African textures. Befitting a romantic weekend, Ikhaya comes with a Queen-size bed (linen and towels provided), a unique indoor/outdoor shower, a Victorian style bath tub, a fireplace, a braai area, and a small jetty and lapa.
About 300m up the way and also overlooking the river and surrounding mountains, River Indlu has two ensuite bedrooms, both with double beds. The decor here is also subtle African, with a touch of Old Farmhouse. One of the bedrooms comes with indoor/outdoor shower, while the second has a bath tub with a view. Again, there is a fireplace and the kitchen is well equipped.
Kumba Cottage overlooks the dam and olive grove. In times past it was the main farmhouse at Bronze Grove. Today it's a beautifully restored abode with oodles of wow factor. The two bedrooms have double beds and indoor/outdoor showers. The kitchen is geared for easy self-catering, while the large stoep and covered braai area will fill your time. As with the other cottages, Kumba offers great views of the surrounding mountains and fynbos.
While away your days at Bronze Grove with swimming in the dam or river, bass fishing off Ikhaya's jetty (catch and release only), ticking off birds from a specially compiled bird-spotter list, walking, hiking, braaing, and popping into nearby Barrydale for its restaurants and general appeal.
"Beautiful little place."

"We stayed at River Indlu and loved our visit to this farm. The setting is breathtaking, and the cottages are very comfortable. We felt safe having our dogs roam freely, and will definitely be back. Unfortunately there is no dam or river for swimming, but nearby rock pools made up for it. Thanks for having us!"

"Exactly what we were looking for - quiet location in a lovely setting, but not too far from local amenities. Place was clean and reasonably well equipped, with comfortable beds and good shower. Local restaurants in Barrydale were very good (recommend The Blue Cow) and the spa at Warmwaterberg also recommended."

"Most amazing location tucked away in the valley against the mountains. Wonderful seclusion, but very close to Barrydale and its good restaurants. Highly recommended and my dogs loved it too! The facilities and interior of the cottage were very good."

"We loved our stay at Bronze Grove! We stayed at River Ikhaya and had full privacy. Our dogs loved roaming the area, and we felt rested and rejuvenated afterwards. Sadly due to the drought the river and dam were not very full, but we enjoyed it nonetheless."

"We pulled into bronze Grove tired and hungry but we're soon settled in and had the fire crackling and hot soup on the go. Awoke next morning to a white frost and later the sun was warm, so take warm things for the night and summer stuff for the days. We walked on the farm and mountain trails and had dinner in Barrydale with the Karoo Art Hotel in the Main St ,coming out tops. So don't buy your lady flowers and chocolate take her to this romantic cottage and rekindle the flame fellas."

"Bronze Grove Farm - River Indlu cottage stay. Our family had a fantastic weekend on this lovely farm. The cottage was superb in every way, the setting are beautiful with hectares of open space and fresh air. I can highly recommend Bronze Grove farm, especially the cottages at the river side. Thank you Caroline and the beautiful workers who gave us the warmest welcome for sharing this piece of paradise with us."

"Such a wonderful place to relax and get away from everyday busy life with nothing but mountains around you. The hospitality was fantastic, Percy is a lovely person and we appreciated all the attention to detail like fresh flowers, fresh eggs and milk and olives. I would recommend it for anyone and definitely be back."

"I truly enjoyed my stay. It was a lovely getaway from the busy noise of Cape Town. It was peaceful and quiet. I even got to see a couple of baboons."

"A very pleasant spacious cottage in a picturesque setting. Well equipped, including braai's on the stoep and in the garden. The room is clean, comfortable and spacious. The walks along the river were easy and delightful. Walks around the main farm, on the other side of the road past the dam and the animals and up onto the ridge overlooking Barrydale offer more testing terrain. Slight negative - we had difficulty locating Percy to check in and it was a disappointment that Rodger and Carol were unexpectedly absent from their farm."

"We spent a wonderful three nights at River Ikhaya, which is a well-equipped cottage in a private setting alongside the Tradouw river and at the start of the Tradouw pass. Although our stay was in mid-summer, we did not need to dip in the river as much as we had anticipated because a breeze from the Langeberg mountains kept us cool on most days (although it would have been very hot had this not been the case). The small town of Barrydale is five minutes away, and with its many restaurants and quirky stores it was interesting to explore. We also tasted wine at the Joubert-Tradouw wine farm and enjoyed their Chardonnay. On one of the days, we drove down the spectacular Tradouw pass to the beautiful village of Suurbraak, which is an historic mission town. Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, with its many hiking and mountain biking trails was also not too far away. The cottage itself had everything that we required for a comfortable stay. I would recommend bringing a bird book and binoculars for bird-watching enthusiasts. The best part of the stay was being able to spend the long, peaceful afternoons and evenings reading, napping and braaing at leisure. Thanks to Percy for looking after us."

"To sum up my experience at Bronze Grove Farm in one word, amazing would be the appropriate word. Perfect get away for a couple that would like to relax and be away from the outside world. My partner enjoyed it so much, that she said we should return again this year. She does not want to go anywhere else. The house is well situated, just behind a river, which adds to its tranquil and romantic setting. All the small gestures was highly appreciated, and made the stay even more pleasant. We will definitely be returning."

"We had such a wonderful stay for two nights at River Indlu. The setting was serene, and the cottage was immaculately clean, had all the necessary amenities, as well as lovely touches that went above and beyond. It was the perfect place to just relax and unwind - we went for walks around the farm, fishing in the dam (sadly a bit too cold to swim at the moment!), and just enjoyed the beautiful cottage. We will definitely be back!"

"My husband and I recently spent a weekend at Bronze Grove Farm and stayed in the Kumba Cottage. We absolutely loved our time there. A peaceful and tranquil getaway from the city life. Its was so lovely having breakfast outside, watching the view of the dam and beautifully surroundings and been visited by the animals on the farm. My favourite part of the stay was the shower...amazing! And I loved that the toilet is separate from the bathroom. It's in the bedroom but separate from the shower. We also received fresh, clean towels. Percy, our host, was so friendly and helpful. The same can be said for her husband Blessing who helped us with the fireplace and supplied us some rain water. Note: you can't drink the water on the farm unless you boil it. The fireplace is a very old-fashioned but we loved it. It was my husband's favourite "toy" for the weekend. You can also take walks around the farm which I suggest is a must. So lovely. On your walk you may come across some zebras and cows but they'll leave you alone if you leave them alone. We were sad to leave but look forward to going back. I highly recommend Kumba Cottage. Amazing!"

"It's not often that reality is nicer than the pictures, but this is how we felt about Bronze Grove Farm. The accommodation itself was beautiful, great linen and shower especially. But having a river right on your doorstep was heavenly, coupled with a spectacular front row seat to baboon antics on the mountain just in front of the house. We had an amazing restful time, thank you!"

"Such a beautiful farm with the most amazing scenery. My Fiancé and I were staying in the chalet River Indlu last weekend and had the most amazing time. The view from the chaletis beautiful and extremely relaxing, we wanted to stay all week. We went off for some lovely walks, and Barrydale is so close for dinners or just to visit. Such a great break, we will definitely be going back!"

"Bronze Grove was a fantastic stay for us. We stayed in River Ikhaya, a private house right by the river. The breeze across the water made it perfect during the hot weather and the house was always cool and comfortable. There are three options for fires, two outside braais (one on the grass, the other on the patio), and an inside fire for cooler evenings. The available cooking facilities were perfect and the complimentary sherry was most welcome on our arrival! We also really enjoyed the outdoor shower. The river water was beautiful and welcomed after walking in Barrydale. It is only a few minutes drive from the main areas of the town, but plenty to see in neighbouring towns. We will definitely come back to say again."

"What a wonderful experience we had. Everything was spotless and the decor really thought through. I didn't feel like I was in somebody else's house with hand-me-downs. Percy and the male driver , forgot is name, were a delight. Friendly, helpful and full of knowledge of the local weather. I would love to keep this place a secret so I do not have to book a year in advance but the Williams family have been great to us so I wish them success and have already told everyone about Bronze Grove Farm. Loved it"

"Lovely little place for a quick getaway without the hassle of having to drive ridiculously far. Peaceful, quiet, neat, and with all the essentials one would need. Great base from where to explore surrounding area or just stay on the farm for some peace of mind. I can recommend it and I'll definitely consider it again in the future!"

"One of the best places we've stayed at, highly recommended. Very private and romantic, this self catering cottage had it all: from sherry on arrival, organic eggs and milk placed in the kitchenette, braai wood and even a warm water bottle for the cold evenings. It is the perfect getaway for cyclists and other outdoor/nature lovers. Thanks for a fantastic weekend stay."

"We spent a most rejuvenating weekend at the River Indlu cottage on Bronze Grove Farm. The cottage well located, practically appointed, beautifully furnished, welcoming, clean, cosy and too-many-to-mention little things make you feel that all you have to do is relax and have a good time. The hosts are warm and friendly and so are their staff. I recommend this venue wholeheartedly!"

"We spent two nights in the romantic River Ikhaya. It rained non-stop for the first twelve hours and the river flooded its banks - quite impressive from the cosy comfort of our bed! It snowed and the peaks were chilly and white, but a cheerful fire and a deep bubble bath soon warmed us up."

"We returned to Bronze Grove as promised to try out River Ikhaya. It is everything we wanted for a romantic getaway, and we highly recommend the cottage to all who need time out and a special treat."
(visited April 2013)
"Bronze Grove is definitely on my list of must go back getaways! Four of us stayed in River Indlu and it was perfect for our needs - privacy, silence and good accommodation in pleasant surroundings. The farm is at the beginning of the Tradouw pass, so the setting is stunning. We went for a drive down to Heidelberg and took the back roads to Riversdal - we got lost, but it didn't matter because the trip through the farms in the foothills of those wonderful mountains was really special. We drove through Garcia pass and across to the R62, and so back to Barrydale and lunch at the Country Pumpkin. We are already planning a return trip!"

"We loved everything about this getaway (we stayed in River Indlu, the larger of the two cottages). The cottage is far better than the photos make it seem. Décor is understated but perfect. The setting is fantastic and we spent many happy hours sitting on the stoep watching the birds, nguni cattle, baboons around the river and in the hills. Koos and Marie (the managers) were the most warm, hospitable people to welcome us and show us around. I haven't seen that many stars at night in years! And the other cottage is quite far away so you feel as if you're all alone in the middle of nature. One of the best Budget Getaways I've ever been to."
(visited September 2012)
"Welcoming and chatty Marie and her husband Koos awaited us. While the owners were out of town, she showed us proudly the cottage. It was the one that sleeps two (River Ikhaya). And boy, there is much to be proud of! A beautiful hide-away, skilfully renovated and warmly prepared for guests with fynbos bouquets from the farm... a five star hotel can’t beat this. While you sit on your veranda, Nguni cows pass by. Our evening walk on the farm property was beautiful, with zebra’s grazing around us and a stunning sunset. In such a romantic cottage, we were probably one of the few guests that were not on honeymoon. But I can recommend staying at Bronze Grove Farm to everyone!"
