Budget Getaways Review
Lying just off the N2 and almost halfway between Plett (11km) and Knysna (19km), this well-maintained 24ha property of landscaped gardens and pine forest not only offers six thatch cottages, but is also home to the much-loved Adventure Land, and its kiddie wonderland of super tubes, water slides, trampolines and all things fun.
Tickets to Adventure Land (Open from Sept to end April) come free to guests at Coral Tree. In other words, this is one getaway where you, as frazzled parent, are guaranteed some time out.
Focussing on the accommodation (which is set away from Adventure Land), the six cottages are equally split between one- and two-bedroom units, which can sleep a max of four and six guests respectively once lounge sleeper couches for the kids are factored in. They're all spacious, neat as a pin and fully equipped for a very comfortable stay.
Sweet-smelling thatch, French doors, bay windows, satellite TV, open-plan kitchens with shiny appliances, good linen and comfortable mattresses, tidy bathrooms, uncluttered and coordinated décor, are common to all.
The two-bedroom cottages offer the extra space and beds, with one of them even having its own private pool.
Outside, built-in braai areas and luxuriant green lawns fringed with a rush of shrubs and flowers, plus a sparkling communal swimming pool are again standard to all six cottages.
The general feedback for Coral Tree bodes well: “These cottages are absolutely lovely and well stocked for self-catering,” says a traveller from Cape Town. “Within walking distance from the water park that the kids love and less than a kilometer from some of the Garden Route’s best mountain bike trails,” says another adventure seeker.
While the general atmosphere at Coral Tree is without doubt tranquil, you will be aware of a low growl emanating from the N2, which a buffer of trees, gardens and abundant birdlife doesn't quite eliminate - Wagtail Cottage would be our first choice of chalet as it lies furthest from the road.
This small caveat aside, Coral Tree remains a very comfortable base to the surrounding forests, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.
