Budget Getaways Review
The getaway? A converted school hostel from a bygone era with eight basic dorms, seven twin/double rooms and a private three-bedroomed apartment, housing a grand total of 70 guests.
The setting? Right at the edge of Greyton, but still central. Fynbos and mountains of the Greyton Nature Reserve through the back door, the village centre less than 500m from the front door.
The general vibe? Simple, clean, fun and friendly.
The facilities? Pretty basic but everything you need, including linen on classic old metal frame beds, a hearty wood-burning stove in the fully equipped kitchen, no ensuite bathrooms, meals on request, kitchenettes in the twin rooms, outdoor braai area, and more...
The activities? All that Greyton has to offer in the way of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, lovely architecture, shady oak avenues, bubbling brooks (not of the infirm type), horse riding, mountain biking, hikes in the Riviersonderend.
Ideal for? Large groups on a budget (church, school, hiking, team-building etc) that wish to be under one gesellig roof.
The price tag? Pretty darn affordable.
What do the ex-guests say? “We were made to feel so welcome, and the locally produced food was delicious, the scenery and the eco credentials of Greyton are outstanding, we had a fabulous time.” “The accommodation was very basic, but had everything we needed and Janet was very welcoming and accommodating.” “After my week in Greyton and at the lodge it felt so at home that I didn’t want to leave. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay and extra special treatment.” "Nice, clean, user- friendly and very affordable." "What a wonderful place - big, cool, friendly. Full of books, animals, walks." "This is our fourth visit and we hope to come again."
The bottom line: Travelling with a small Third World country in tow? Look no further than Greyton Ecolodge, folks.
"The host, Janet, and her team, Rodene and co are super friendly and amazing. The place needs an overall upgrade, some fresh wall paint won't hurt, a bit of renovations plus regular thorough cleaning. It's great value for money, cosy and has clean linen. We stayed for a week and it felt like home."

"I want to take the time to thank you so very much for the most amazing stay. I fell in love with Greyton. The town, the dirt roads, mountains and countryside as well as the warm hospitality at the lodge. From the first moment they were amazing and went out of their way to make my stay simply spectacular. My room with the fire place made my stay so special and cozy. Thank you for allowing me to use to the room with amazing views for inspiration to make my dress. After my week in Greyton and at the lodge it felt so at home that I didn't want to leave. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay and extra special treatment."
