Budget Getaways Review
Perched on the hillside between the sea and the lakes, what we have here is a house split into two self-catering units, both overlooking Island Lake, the snaking course of the Serpentine River, the Garden Route's indigenous forests and the Outeniqua Mountains beyond. Add a fishing rod, canoe, and this could be just what the doctor ordered for your summer family holiday.
Both units are spacious and quite modern in decor. They also make full use of the great views via large sliding doors.
The upstairs unit sleeps two in a double bedroom (with ensuite bath and shower), plus there's a sleeper couch in the lounge for two more. The living area slides open to a massive 15m long balcony. The kitchen is fully equipped and the lounge and dining area spacious.
Downstairs you'll find the larger unit, which sleeps four in two double bedrooms (on a double bed and two singles), that again open to a long balcony. As with the top unit, you’ve got a lounge/dining area and equipped kitchen.
The units have separate entrances and are linked by an internal staircase and a solid door, should you wish to separate them - our gut instinct says book them as one.
There’s a double garage for the family station wagons, plus two extra off-street parking spots for the passing visitors on their way to that municipal spot in J-Bay - a warning to those not booking their hols via Budget Getaways.
Towels (beach and bath), Weber braais, Wifi and TV (bring your own smartcard for DSTV) are thrown into the deal, meaning all you really need bring along is the canoe and the Venter trailer of beach toys.?
Round up the troops, pack the cooler, life on the stoep has just got better. ?
"I had the pleasure of staying at the Wilderness Lake View Self-Catering from May through September 2012. It is perfectly located with quick and easy access to area restaurants, the beach or the many hiking trails in the areas. My wife is a bird watcher and she loved watching the variety of birds around the home from the balcony. It is a great place to call "home" if you are in the Wilderness area."

"I spent my holidays two times there from January to March 2011 and 2012. The view from the terrace above the Lake Island and the Wilderness National Park is really fantastic. Wilderness Lake View is facing north and I could enjoy my breakfast already on the well-spaced terrace in the sun. Although the apartment is situated close to the N2 I hardly could hear the traffic and so I slept very well. The kitchen was fully equipped and I missed nothing. The cleaning was excellent and the apartment was really spacious and cosy and I felt like home at once. Because the Wilderness Lake View is conveniently located to the N2 you can reach all the POI around Wilderness in a short time. Perfect to explore this beautiful part of the Garden Route."
