Budget Getaways Review
Set against a dramatic mountain backdrop and big open skies, Blue Hippo Farm is an adventure in itself. A short 5-minute drive from the center of Greyton, it's also an easy escape from Cape Town.
Oak Tree Cabin is the "meek and mild" option at Blue Hippo. With a King room and a double and single bed in the lounge area, it packs a family of five. It comes with a fully equipped kitchen and private bathroom.
The American-Indian style Tipi Tents are no doubt an experience. Sleeping up to five on futon-style beds, each Tipi has its own firepit located in its midriff, and access to the communal kitchen, boma area, and ablutions with hot showers.
The Tipis can be booked individually or by your entire urban-Apache tribe - how better to bond than via a wardance around the fire?
A few steps away you'll find a little collection of Hobbit Houses (Tolkein meet Louis L'Amour?), made entirely from natural materials found on and around the farm. Each of these can sleep three guests, and feature cozy indoor fireplaces.
Worth noting is that while the Tipis and Hobbit Houses have no electricity, the communal kitchen, boma and ablutions do.
Apart from novelty factor, Blue Hippo offers plenty do do: catch-and-release fishing, swimming, hiking, birding, mountain biking, regular trips into the village for coffee and meals. The place is also home to a number of animals, including friendly alpacas.
What's more, you can even think of tying the knot at Blue Hippo - if nothing else, it will certainly give your guests a a break from the usual Winelands white wedding.
Quirky and cute, we say why the heck not?
"It was very run down and most of the kids facilities were broken. There was only one horse to ride."

"Just an absolutely magical place against an eerie backdrop of mountain beauty. The hobbit houses and Tipis are spotless and fill one with a sense of adventure each time I visit. We are never disappointed with our visits."
