Budget Getaways Review
From Robertson, a dirt road leads down a fairly unknown funnel of dry country called Agterkliphoogte. Then, over a small crest and Good Hope appears as a pristine pastoral picture backdropped by dramatic mountain. Over a second verge and one arrives at a row of four most appealing Mountain Cottages built on the fynbos slopes, whereas taking a right turn leads you to a second row of five cottages gazing upon a dam.
Somewhat of an anomaly in this historically Afrikaans valley worked by Rabies and De Wets, Good Hope’s cottages are a creative hybrid of Zen-meets-Mexico.
The Mountain Cottages feature crisp grey exteriors, white trim and furnished stoeps. While the individual themes vary slightly, standard to all are neat quality finishes that include terracotta tiles, overhead fans, fireplaces and fully equipped kitchens.
A shaded patio fronts each unit, where you will find a hammock suspended during the summer months – says something about weekend priorities here. Close by is a colourful communal lapa with a braai, pool and outrageous loo with a view (with foot rests, nogal!). Well-controlled pets are permitted up at the Mountain Cottages.
Recently added at the Mountain Cottages is a vollley ball court and jungle gym for the kids.
Moving across to the Dam Cottages, these are intentionally more rustic. All overlook the farm's dam and distant mountains, and each has a bedroom with double bed, a lounge with fireplace (all but one unit), a stoep with braai, and creative hacienda-inspired décor.
Dam Cottages share a wonderful communal kitchen, equipped with a view, posh gas stove, fridge and long table. There’s even a pizza oven! As such this makes a great group getaway.
These cottages also now have their own new pool and lapa - what more incentive do you need?
Apart from all the above, there's a refurbished cottage available, called Lavender. Appointed on its own and overlooking yet another dam, Lavender has two bedrooms (with one double bed and two singles) and is fully equipped, including DSTV.
It doesn't end there though. There's a a spacious six-sleeper farmhouse with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, overlooking vineyards and rolling lawns.
If you simply can't miss the rugga on telly, pack a beer or two and wander down to Good Hope's communal lounge with large flatscreen.
Need more enticement? No problem. Good Hope Farm has more than enough scope for walks through fynbos and a hike into the kloof behind the farm.
There are also the two dams containing large mouth bass, a 4x4 trail on the neighbour’s farm and, of course, the usual farm animals wondering about.
Whew! Enough said for now.
"We enjoyed our stay. Lovely view over the dam."

"We stayed in the River Cottages, which overlook the dam. Our party occupied 3 of the 5 cottages, and took over the communal kitchen. If there were other residents in the cottages, the communal space may have been a bit too small. We loved having the sounds of the frogs send us to sleep every night. The canoes were a treat too! Enjoyed the stay, and will definitely be back."

"Taryn and Tienie are great hosts and even arranged an Easter egg hunt for the kids, the walks on the farm are lovely and the place is very suitable for group getaways."

"We enjoyed our weekend thoroughly. Being cut off from the outside world and technology was bliss. Doing things together chatting and just plain lazing around. We most certainly will do it again as this is my husband and my 4th time to the farm. We stayed at the dam cottages, the men went fishing. Even though it was raining the Friday we arrived it was heaven. I also recommend the Lavender cottage for couples who want a romantic getaway alone."

"We spent an absolute fab weekend at the mountain cottages. We were a group of four families and loved it! Super accommodation, the hammocks and patio furniture were put to good use. Great destination. No cell phone signal! Would highly recommend (just be aware that you are in the middle of no-where so you won't just be popping to the Spar for fresh rolls for lunch!)."

"As promised in January, I returned and this time we were a party of ten. Five couples ... I called the weekend a Couple's Retreat and our entire group thoroughly enjoyed every minute of their stay. Goodhope Farm will at least see us once a year in the future."

"We were a party of four and stayed in two of the Dam Cottages. We had a wonderful stay, welcomed by the owner Rick, Buddy and the poultry. Spent half the day in the beautiful swimming pool also enjoying pizza's, which we made in the wood-fired pizza oven. A getaway which we look forward to returning to."

"What a magical weekend! A fabulous place to spend our 5th wedding anniversary with our daughter and our close friends... We will definitely be back. Thanks again to Shirlee and Rick."

"Definitely will book again before the Xmas holidays. So tranquil and the night stars are brilliant."

"The trip to Good Hope Farm is a fondly remembered one. Waking up to the sounds of ducks on the dam and falling asleep on the hammock in the afternoon dusk. Absolute bliss! The mini-adventure we experienced on the last day topped off an exceptional weekend. If you want to experience it too... book one of these cottages and try to find the waterfall (and rockpool) hidden nearby. And, word of advice... the small waterfall you come across first, is NOT it!"

"Had a wonderful time celebrating my 40th birthday!! Lovely setting, beautiful, neat cottages - really value for money!! Will definitely be back."
(visited April 2007)
"We stayed in the cottages and booked all four for our group. It was fabulous. Great value for money and fantastic setting. All modern home comforts there. Definitely not 'roughing' it. Going back as soon as I have a free weekend."
