Budget Getaways Review
Best we set the record straight before we get cracking on this one: those new low-profiles on your Corsa bakkie ain’t going to cut the mustard here. Klipspringer on the Groot Toren mountain top requires a suitable 4x4 with good ground clearance just to get to the cottage. Anything less than that and you're going to need some help getting home before your adventure has even begun.
Right, let's change gear and start climbing. From word go you’ll be clawing your way up the Groot Toren through virgin fynbos and proteas, eventually peaking at Klipspringer Cottage - a secluded refuge perched on a gentle slope, circled by 1000ha of fynbos and views to eternity and back.
The cottage is a rustic stone-and-thatch number, sleeping a total two guests and fitted with basic comforts required for a night or two at altitude, including solar lighting and gas geyser for hot water.
The pitched thatch roof houses a mezzanine loft room with double bed, while down at ground zero you’ll find the living area.
The kitchenette is a simple affair, with kettle, gas cooker, dining table and a welcome indoor braai/fireplace - ask any Souf Efrican Everest climber, it's no fun braaing your chop in the snow.
The bathroom has a loo and shower.
Throw open the double doors leading off the living room onto a timber deck and max out on those views. Alternatively, stay in bed and gaze upon them through big loft windows.
Early morning or evening strolls are standard fare, as are the awesome sunsets and deafening silence.
Flipping through the Klipspringer guestbook all appears to meet Captain Getaway's discerning eye: “Spectacular day and night views.” “What an amazing place!” “All the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday.”
If you’re up for adventure and have the wheels to match, Klipspringer is for you.
"Klipspringer if a fantastic spot perched high up in the mountains. All you need in a simple and clean setting. Will definitely be back."

"When looking for a remote mountain cottage with breathtaking views, look no further. Klipspringer removes all modern distractions and allow you to take in the pure rawness of the mountains and mother nature. A beautiful cottage with just what you need. Note, they say you need a 4x4... don't take that lightly, you NEED a 4x4! We made it to the top without any issues and enjoyed every single minute of our stay! Klipspringer will definitely see us again soon."

"My partner and I had our eye on Klipspringer for months as we were in need of an off the grid escape! The place seemed very popular on Budget Getaways and was booked out for most the year so we were delighted when for one weekend in December it was available for my partners birthday; it meant to be! On arriving in McGregor it was a short drive to the entrance of the Groot Toren trail where we began to ascend the 4x4 part of the mountain. Note - an adequate 4x4 vehicle completely necessary! This was so much fun. It was the hottest day of the year and as we climbed up the air cooled down nicely. After 25 minutes we turned the corner and there was the most quaint A-frame stone cottage with staggering panoramic views. Klipspringer actually reminds me of the gingerbread house out of Hansel and Gretel. We parked, unpacked and within minutes we were sitting back on the deck enjoying a crisp glass of wine taking in the serenity and view. The stars are out of this world, and at dawn the most beautiful bird life can be enjoyed. I did a beautiful 5km trail run the next morning and found the 4x4 path perfect for this. We braaied both nights and found the cottage so comfortable with absolutely everything you need for a weekend away. Marinda hasn't missed a beat, the kitchen is well stocked and even has a coffee plunger, nice wine glasses etc. The shower is also great - nice pressure and temperature but use water sparingly!Thank you Marinda, Klipspringer is incredible, we cannot wait to return again next year! "Wow, what a place! It's tucked up high in the mountains and is amazingly still. The cottage is really nicely decorated and had everything we needed. The hikes were spectacular too... views that go on and on forever and we think we saw leopard spoor (or some big cat!). The perfect place for tranquility and absolute privacy. We can't wait to go back. We also enjoyed a tasting at Lord's Wines on the way there - I can highly recommend that."

"An amazing place. Simple & comfortable. It was possibly one of the best places we have visited & a real getaway with not another person in sight. Highly recommended."

"Our host Marinda and her husband welcomed us at Lords Winery outside McGregor and took the time to drive us up the mountain and fetch us again. It was just amazing only nature and silence. We enjoyed our stay at Klipspringer and we felt welcome from walking through the door. The cottage is comfortable, well equipped, cosy and clean. If you do not experience this, you are missing out!"

"Klipspringer was an amazing experience. We travel a lot and visit new locations and Klipspringer blew my mind by the setting, hospitality and value for money. When entering the cabin it's so beautiful and my smile went from cheek to cheek. You have everything that you need. If I could I would live forever at Klipspringer!"

"This was the best weekend break away ever. At last we found a place that exceeded our expectations and the pictures. This isolated cottage is tucked away deep in the mountains, yet the cottage is furnished so tastefully with all the necessities as well as loads of extras (good wine glasses, coffee plunger, very nice linen). Our host was so well organised and assisted us with all our questions beforehand, making this break away pure pleasure."

"Very well equipped, neat and tidy cosy cottage with magnificent views. A detailed route map was provided. We only did half the 4 x 4 route, the easy part, as it was our first 4 x 4 route challenge and we were only one vehicle. This part of the route was well marked and maintained and was, although challenging at places, relatively easy with no risks of scratches or damage to our vehicle. Would like to do the whole route a next time."

"It was absolutely wonderful!"

"Our stay at Groot Toren was fantastic, I only wish it could have been longer. The setting is absolutely amazing, the views over the valley superb, and the peace and tranquility we found up there in the mountains were very a special treat. The cottage itself was exactly what we expected; a small, cozy getaway spot, with all the facilities we needed, and a lovely rustic charm. For a 4x4 beginner, getting up to the cottage was exciting. The Toyota Fortuner we were in handled the road with ease. That said, we didn't venture around the 4x4 loop as I thought it would probably have been beyond my driving skills. Having run the loop via the Goud-Gat viewpoint I'm glad we didn't try, it looked tough, but probably a 4x4 expert's dream. All in all it was a great weekend away, somewhere we will definitely be returning to in the future."

"Definitely one of the top 5 4x4 getaways in the Western Cape. The view and the silence is breathtaking and the rustic old stone cottage one of a kind."

"An absolutely wonderful cottage. Great getaway to recharge you batteries in God's creation. The only sad thing was the fire damage to the fynbos that has destroyed most of the fynbos on the 4x4 route. Thankfully new growth is evident with different flowers and grasses emerging. Lots of protea seeds waiting to germinate too. The cottage is beautifully built and highly recommended."

"Tranquility, peacefulness and all over beauty is merely a few words to describe this peace of heaven. What an amazing getaway! Our one year wedding anniversary was celebrated amongst the most breathtaking views of the mountains. The fynbos and plant life is astounding. It is the most 'sewejaartjies' and Proteas I have ever seen in one place. The 4x4 trail was brilliant, but please do remember that a 4x2 will not be sufficient for this trail. Overall our best getaway. We are already booking our next visit to Klipspringer."

"Fabulous place to relax, beautiful walks!"
(visited June 2014)
"We had a fantastic stay at the Groot Toren mountain lodge. It's location is perfect for resetting the senses and relaxing, while offering some exhilarating 4x4 trails and an unrivalled feeling of isolation. We only saw one other vehicle (in the distance) in three days. While basic, the lodge is clean and offers everything needed for a few nights stay. There are also fabulous views. Marinda is really lovely. We met her at Lord's Winery to collect the keys, where she organised a cheese platter and wine tasting for us. A great place to stock up on some decent local plonk before heading up the mountain. Overall we had highly memorable break and look forward to visiting again, maybe in a season. The huge array of proteas must be unbelievable when they are flowering."
