Budget Getaways Review
A friendly fruit and cattle farm in the picturesque Greyton valley, Oewerzicht has grown in leaps and bounds since the motley BG crew first visited about 15 years ago.
At last count the following were available: six luxury Out of Africa style safari tents overlooking the Riviersonderend; three elegant cottages; a row of four renovated workers’ cottages with panoramic outlook; 26 campsites along the river's edge; a conference venue for 25 delegates; weddings for a party of 80; and a pack of other odds and ends and activities to rev up your weekend.
The Safari Tents are a sought-after venue among couples or groups of couples seeking a camping experience, but without the discomforts associated with the real thing (viz. leaking tents and rockhard ground).
Access to this novel idea is via a suspension bridge over the river. The six tents, a hybrid of canvas, screed cement and brick and wood, lie about 20m apart and offer all the comforts, among them a double bed, elegant furniture, overhead fans, bedside lamps, a small fridge, tea-making facilities and your own bathroom.
Each tent flaps open to a covered stoep and braai area. Kitchen facilities are communal so it’s not a bad idea at all to book the entire camp. Camping in the wild will never be the same again!
Back across the water, Citrus and the semi-detached Welgeleë and Bergzicht face Oewerzicht's citrus orchards and have feel-good country personas.
The touches here include bluegum beam ceilings, antique and cane furniture, open hearths, plenty of Oregon and comfortable beds. Again, no going wrong with these Cape cottages.
Further up the road and perched above the valley are Oewerzicht's four tidy ex-worker cottages, collectively known as Uitsig Cottages.
Separated by reed walls and green grass, the cottages are nicely decorated in a simple yet creative style: cane and paint-effect furniture, faux terracotta tiles, wall heaters, a fireplace, quality linen, etc.
Adding to the general appeal of open views and green grass is a communal swimming pool. Essential for those white-haze summer days.
For ye hardened outdoor types, the Oewerzicht campsite consists of 26 private sites, some shaded by reed shelters. The sites are spread out along the river bank with modern ablutions and braai facilities.
Oewerzicht’s rolling wheatlands are home to a herd of rhebuck as well as a mixed birdlife, among it the blue crane, secretary bird and large flocks of guinea fowl. As a guest you are free to roam the farm, whether on foot, bike or canoe (bring your own). Plus, Greyton and it's many weekend lures is only 9km away. Fishing and tubing in the river is also an option.
The bottom line? As a sociable country venue for small groups of family and friends, you won't go wrong with Oewerzicht.
"Little England village when you arrive at Greyton then we arrive at Oewerzicht you are blown away by the quite tranquil beauty. You leave knowing you going coming back to this gem."

"Had a wonderful weekend. The facilities are clean and tidy. Reception was great. Need some work on some of the linen, some of the rugs are falling apart. We did not have any contact with the manager on duty."

"My Family and I have visited Oewerzicht a number of times over the past 4-6 years, their hospitality has not disappointed us yet, and I am confident it never will! I have since introduced a number of my Friends to Owerzicht and they were equally happy during their stay."

"A great dog-friendly getaway. A lovely setting, good value, friendly people. This has now become our yearly winter holiday destination. We've only used the self-catering accommodation, not the tented camps. Awesome service and wonderful setting on this working farm just outside of Greyton. Highly recommended getaway for the family for an extended visit. Thank you so much Heidi, once again. Hopefully see you again July 2015."
