Fun in concept and truly novel, Arendsnes I comprises a pair of massive Plettenberger caravans cemented down the middle for life by a covered passage that serves as a common living and dining area. If you like character you’ll love this getaway.
The river and vineyard setting is private and beautiful, infused with the spirit and adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The furnishing and décor are simple and neat and from another era, but everything is there that you need, including an equipped kitchen, fireplace, two bathrooms and a long sundowner deck. Arendsnes is built for a group escape and it can hold a large one of 13 should there be call for it.
Further down the way, the Wooden Cottage is infused with the same free spirit. This time we have a dinky double-storey timber abode appointed on park-like lawns, with views towards the river, the vineyards and distant mountains. Sitting about 100m from the water and 40m from Arendsnes I, it's also private.
The emphasis at the Wooden Cottage is on casual family weekending, with a braai on the top deck and a shaded lapa below, again with braai area and seating. The Wooden Cottage has beds for 7, but in practice this would be a serious squeeze.
After braaing to your heart's content, paddling up and down the river (boat provided), trying your luck at fishing, wandering around Jemine's beautiful garden and dipping into her pool, it's time to trundle back to the dinky cabin, light the fire, crack open a Lager and watch the local birdlife settle down in the trees.
"This has to be one of the best getaways we have yet found - exquisitely beautiful, unbelievably tranquil, and so private. We were very surprised at how nicely decorated the place was - we had expected something more basic and somewhat older in appearance from comments in the Budget Getaway book. But it has to be said, the entire family were very impressed at how appealing it looked, the fresh bedding and ample supply of extra blankets etc. Even the 2 vases of fresh flowers put there for us. The fact that it was also equipped with a TV was great, since all the ""boys"" could watch cricket! The guys also tried their hand at a little bass fishing in the river (they were clever enough to bring their fishing rods!). The surrounding gardens leave one gasping - the countless flowers, hidden walkways and covered areas are awesome - with the added magic of a resident peacock. The visitors book is testimony of our impression of this place."
