Budget Getaways Review
Eagles' Call can be found midway between Wilderness and Sedgefield on a small farm tucked between the ethereal Langvlei and Rondevlei lakes - both an integral part of the Wilderness National Park.
Your bed in this pretty neck of the woods comes in three forms: Eagle’s Call (shaded by trees and an indigenous garden fed by crystal-clear water), The Tree House (for those with a taste for adventure); and The Chalet ( a good choice for couples).
The aptly named Eagles' Call features three bedrooms, one with Queen and ensuite, the other two with a pair of singles and a shared bathroom - the cottage sleeps six total. Timber floors run the length of the house and the decor is cottage-style, with plenty in the way of cane and pine.
The kitchen is nicely equipped, linen and towels are provided (bring own swimming towels), as is DSTV. There's no fireplace, but there is a braai.
You'll also find a covered patio with a lovely outlook towards the forest, and a pool at the main house (40m away) for that midday dunk.
The Tree House is let separately and aimed at those wanting to be in closer commune with nature. It requires a bit of a trek up a steep hill, so getting there is for the moderately fit. It does however come equipped with all the essentials, like bathroom facilities, mattresses (bring own sleeping bag), a gas hotplate and kettle. Now, who said life is for the birds?
The Chalet is a cozy private abode that's new to the Eagle’s Call mix. Aimed couples or a small family, it sports an ensuite bedroom with Queen bed and a double sleeper couch in the lounge. The Chalet is fully equipped and kitted with DSTV (extra costs apply) and a fireplace to keep the winter chill at bay.
Adding to the general appeal of all three units, are the Rondevlei and Malachite bird hides, both within walking distance. Eagle's Call is twitcher's paradise - fish eagles, owls, they're all there.
"The treehouse was a spectacular stay for us, incredible views, very secluded and nestled wonderfully into nature. We knew it was going to be rustic going in, but a few things like the lack of a spatula and a hot plate which only heats up one tiny portion of the pan made cooking somewhat challenging. Otherwise it was a fantastic little spot, would definitely recommend it, don't be too afraid of the climb, it's tough, but so worth it."

"We spent two very comfortable nights at Eagle's Call Self-Catering Cottage. The Sunbirds, Waxbills and other bird life in the garden and the close proximity of two other bird hides was fantastic. The Jackal Buzzard nesting in a tree on the property was a bonus, as was the Fish Eagle sitting on a nest on a neighbouring property. The washing machine was just what we needed after camping and staying in other places for more than two weeks. Very friendly owners. Loved seeing the Fork Tailed Drongo eat out of the owner's hand. A great destination for birders and others wanting to explore the Wilderness area. Value for money? Don't think you can beat it!"

"About three years ago we found the incredible Eagles Call Treehouse hideaway near Sedgefield, which we thought was our own private secret! Finding your site has made us realise we need to broadcast our experience of this hidden gem where we find solace and 100% connection to nature and ourselves. And while the Treehouse become a 'secret' nature paradise for my wife and I, the cottage below has housed many friends who have asked to join us there to see what we have been raving about. We highly recommend both types of accommodation to anyone looking for a stunning experience in an incredible setting."

"Eagles Call is a place in true nature. Sitting high up in the trees literally at bird flight level, your soul can take flight. I absolutely love it there. You are separated from any signs of civilisation and the demands of life can simply fall into the flow of nature. I feel free there and at one with nature."

"The room was dirty, the kettle was black on the inside and there is no way the room was cleaned before we arrived. We were not told that we should bring our own bedding and when we arrived they said I hope you have bedding so that night we slept on a stained sheet that was in the room. I also feel that the treehouse is unsafe."

Further to your comments re my tree house. I find your comments extremely unfounded and untrue - the tree house was cleaned with new bedding and sleeping bags were in the cupboard for your use even though the advert on Budget Getaways states that you must take your own sleeping bags. As we use borehole water we do have iron build up on our appliances - under no circumstances was the kettle in any way dirty. The tree house is a hundred per cent safe and I ask that you retract your defamatory statements about my Tree House.

"I stayed at Eagles Call tree house late last year, and although the facilities are basic, it accorded with our expectations. The tree house is definitely rustic, but the room, bathroom and beds were clean, and the outdoor gas-heated shower was an unexpected boon. The view is wonderful and you feel like you're getting away from it all. Gail and Koos are pleasant hosts and their dog, Thandi, a delight to play with. The daily hike and up and down the hill kept our fitness levels up during the stay! This is a great budget option, nothing fancy, but you are able to braai at the foot of the hill. The cottage looks lovely too and we are considering staying there again in future, especially given its proximity to Wilderness and Sedgefield lakes, beaches and facilities."

"I was pleasantly surprised to find an establishment a mere 5 km off the N2, so easily reached yet at the same time totally secluded. The cottage was in a pine forest setting near the lakes and Gail added all the little extra touches that made us feel welcome. It was wonderful waking up to a symphony of bird calls, so much richer than what we get in the city and fortunately Koos locked away the rooster at night so we weren't disturbed. We also got to try out the treehouse for a night. It was quite of a climb and the accomodation was a bit rustic, but my daughter absolutely loved it and the views and early morning sunrise overlooking Rondevlei was too die for! To me an undiscovered gem and at a better price than the places we usually frequent on the N2. Will be back for more!"
