Budget Getaways Review
Comprising 100ha of forest and fynbos and a few token cows, Homtini Guest Farm offers four comfortable cottages - three of them satisfying the 'romantic weekend cabin' fantasy - and four stylish safari tents with valley views.
First up, the cottages. Canopy, Wild Olive and Hazel are idyllic retreats varying a little in style, but unified by their tree canopy setting and big views nicely exploited by timber decks and plenty of glass - for those who like to take their nature indoors.
The above trio are kitted to the same exacting standards - fireplaces, downlighters, ceiling fans, TV, good mattresses and tasteful décor are standard fare in all.
A little different and nearer the main house, Fynbos Cottage is a renovated parkhome far removed from your average Jerry Springer trailer park. While short on forest setting and timber ambience, it's clean, cosy and colourful, with plenty of space outside to swing a cow, accompanied by a vista of the Outeniqua mountains. Good option if you're traveling on a budget.
With more gorgeous views, this time over a forest-clad ravine, the four safari tents comprise The Family Tented Lodge (made up of two four-sleeper tents) and The Couples Tented Lodge with its two tents tucked into private spots along the forest edge.
This is no rough camping experience: the tents all have ensuite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, linen and towels, fridges, and in the case of the family camp, a communal kitchen area, with braai pit to the front.
Homtini Guest Farm offers easy access to the adjacent Homtini state forest (walks, pools, and a circular mountain bike trail) and a host of interesting options at nearby Millwood Forest Reserve.
For a memorable feast, head over to Totties Restaurant for their brilliant Sunday lunch buffet. The breakfasts are also awesome.
If a weekend at Homtini doesn't leave you rejuvenated, odds are nothing will.
"A brilliant setting with peace and quiet and beautiful surrounds."

"It was definitely a holiday to remember. The hospitality was fantastic - thank you Fredrick and Lisa for going out of your way for us. We loved the setting and the view was one you can never get tired of. We are definitely going to be booking a stay at Homtini Guest Farm again soon. This time we are going to be bringing friends with so that they can see how amazing the place is. Words cannot describe."

"What a beautiful getaway! It lived up to all our expectations and then some. We stayed in Hazel cottage, which was clean and well equipped and the forest surroundings were absolutely breathtaking. The deck was perfect for my little boy to run around and play outdoors without us having to worry about him wandering off. Although the Farm was fully occupied, we hardly heard the other guests at all and couldn't see any of the other cottages from ours. There is so much to do in the surrounds and Knysna is close enough for a trip to the shops, although one could easily spend the entire holiday just lounging on the deck with a book. We had a fantastic break and we will certainly be returning."

"A beautiful stay in a beautiful setting away from the crowds. Please cut down and remove the alien vegetation in your forest, it will take over and destroy the unique forests which are already under pressure."

"Wonderful setting overlooking the forest. There are hikes from the guesthouse that are great. And the farm is close to Knysna and Wilderness."

"I wanted a private, romantic, rustic getaway and this weekend was everything I wanted in accommodation, setting and general feel. The hosts were so chilled and lovely. The tents had everything we needed (except some hanging space for my clothes). This farm is about more than just the accommodation. Highly recommend."
