Budget Getaways Review
A 30ha farm framed by the majestic Langeberg Mountain Range – Matzikamma is a well-rounded package offering two cottages in a serene setting. As such it’s a perfect getaway for both families and couples, within easy reach of Bonnievale, Swellendam and Montagu.
Kicking off with Matzikamma Cottage, built to Cape style, the cottage sits in a private setting away from the main house. It comprises a double ensuit bedroom and a second twin ensuite with shower. There's an open-plan kitchen and lounge area with fireplace and indoor braai. This is flanked by two loft areas accessed by internal ladders, where you'll find an extra two single beds on either side. Step out onto the cottage verandah with outdoor braai and take in the views onto a small dam and the Langeberg Mountains in the distance.
A recent addition is River Cottage. The cottage is a good option for couples and has a double bed and ensuite bathroom with a separate shower. This cottage is powered by solar lighting, with an electric fridge (thanks to Eskom) and a gas stove. From the verandah there are equally appealing views, in this case over the Middle River and the mountains in the distance.
Apart from the appealing cottages, Matzikamma has plenty to keep the family occupied: a swimming pool at the main house is available by arrangement and three large dams - ideal quiet spots for those wishing to do a bit of birding. There are horses and cattle, not to mention the Rhodesian Ridgebacks, which are bred on the farm. Apart from that, there's a host of pleasant strolls, cycling and running routes and oodles of tranquility for those wishing to simply kick back with a good book.
Off the farm, you've got the wine routes around Robertson and Swellendam and a host of local attractions in both towns.
"We spent such a wonderful, relaxing long weekend at the beautiful cottage, with generous hospitality and a friendly farm welcome. We enjoyed feeding the horses, and we really enjoyed the farm tour, and fresh farm eggs. We are ruined for supermarket eggs forever! We will certainly be back and tell our friend to visit. We never got to play croquet so we need to return."

"We had the most beautiful relaxing tranquil weekend. It was wonderful having a fireplace/Braai inside especially that it was so cold in the evening. Kate and Athol are really wonderful ."

"From the minute we drove into Matzikamma the amazing experience began. The beautiful surroundings take you in immediately and Kate met us at the entrance with gorgeous Ridgeback Marula and made us feel welcome right away. The farm is absolutely stunning, it feels like the fields go on forever and makes for lots of exploring, and the peacefulness was exactly what we needed. Kate is so fun and informative, and we got to meet all the lovely residents of the farm, from the chickens, to the horses, the cows, dogs and cats, and we even got a ride on the tractor! We really felt at home from the minute we arrived to the day we left, a truly wonderful experience, the accommodation was comfortable and perfect, but the outside took the cake. Thank you Kate and Athol for great weekend away! "

"Athol & Kate were wonderful hosts, and made the Easter weekend even more festive for our children, taking them on a mini tour around their farm in a quad trailer, letting them feed the chickens and play with their beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, and Kate saddling them up for their first supervised ride on a beautiful racehorse. There are a number of boutique wine estates close by, well worth visiting the ones you might not have heard of. Jan Harmsgat Estate was gorgeous, kid-friendly, lovely wines. We stayed at Matzikamma Cottage, which was very cosy for 2 families. The loft beds were initially very exciting for the kids (4, 4 and 6 years old), but as expected they ended up in our rooms anyway! There was plenty of hot water, with a nice shower en-suite in 1 room and a bath in the other. The indoor braai/fireplace was great when the night chilled down. The kitchen is small with a mini oven/stove and a microwave, but we were able to cook up a few great meals with a bit of inventiveness, enough pots & pans & cutlery etc. The drought impacted heavily on the beauty of the surroundings, and when the rains (hopefully) come the local dams & mountainside must look gorgeous. For a rustic family getaway Matzikamma was just right!"

"I absolutely loved my stay at Matzikamma. For my purposes, it was totally ideal. The setting is magnificent and the perfect country getaway retreat. The facilities were just what I needed and the hospitality of the farm owners was natural, spontaneous, warm, generous, accommodating and friendly. Did I want to leave? Absolutely not! But I had to and I will most certainly be going back there."

"The River Cottage offers a tranquil, secluded and peaceful break away for a couple needing time to recharge. The warm personal welcome by host Athol, Kate and Kate's mother added to the welcoming experience. It was no effort for Athol to return to the cottage with additional candles and for Kate to oblige to charge our cell phones. River Cottage is well kept and suitably equipped for a couple. The sound of water from the river is soothing - all a tired couple needs."

"We had a wonderful time! Athol and Kate were very welcoming, helpful and keen to show us all the farm has to offer. Our oldest child absolutely loved the horses, and made it very tricky for us to leave on our last day. We'll be back."

"Beautiful and peaceful!"

"Athol and Kate are amazing hosts and they immediately make you feel at home through their genuine friendliness. The setting is tranquil and majestic and the quietness, broken by only farm noises, is definitely a remedy for the soul. The cottages are very comfortable, fitted with everything needed for a good breakaway. I strongly recommend Matzikamma and a visit to the beautiful neighboring town of Montagu."

"We enjoyed a great break at Matzikamma. Beautiful surroundings, great hosts and a cozy cottage."

"We could only fit in one night at Matzikamma and the owners went out of their way to accommodate our request (they usually only accept two night stays). We loved the friendly hospitality and the unique design of the cottage. Kids must just love those loft rooms and climbing up the cane ladders. We loved having our "own" dam and view of the mountain. This was our first visit to Bonnievale and we realise that one could spend weeks in the area. There is so much to see and do. We highly recommend Matzikamma Cottages."

"We spent a long weekend at Matzikamma for our 1st year wedding anniversary, it was an absolutely magical weekend. We enjoyed the inside and outside braai facilities with magnificent views of the Langeberg mountains. The evenings were so serene and it was lovely to sit and watch the bird life early morning and late evening. The morning walks along the stream and amongst the paddocks were unforgettable and we were lucky enough to witness the birth of a calf. Athol and Kath were fantastic hosts and we were treated daily to a wide selection of fresh herbs and vegetables from the vegetable garden."

"We visited Matzikamma (Paddaparadys Cottage) for a romantic getaway for three nights. We were very impressed on arrival. Everything was very neat, tidy and well kitted out. The bird life and the frog colony is something else. We were even lucky enough to see three very large hares. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the well needed swims in the pool."

"We spent a long weekend at Matzikamma and thought the cottage was fantastic - well equipped, cleverly planned layout with beautiful touches, in a pristine setting with spectacular views. Thanks to the hosts for making it extra special - from providing ample firewood, letting us explore their land, fish in their dams and even teaching us croquet."
