Budget Getaways Review
On a farm tucked into the foothills of the McGregor mountains, the rustic and no-nonsense McGregor Welgedaan Farmhouse looks like a chilled stay for family, friends, or couples (with or without Fido in tow, as it's pooch-friendly).
What’s more, Welgdaan lies pretty close to Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail, making it a good springboard for weekend hikers.
In keeping with the remote location, Welgedaan is off-the-grid; instead, gas geysers, oil lamps and head torches are the order of the night here.
Drilling into the layout of the cottage, you’ve got a total of three bedrooms: a double ensuite (bath, shower, loo), a second double room, and a third sporting two single beds. The latter two rooms share a bathroom with shower and loo. All bedding and towels are thrown in with the deal.
The living area is cosy and shares space with a small open-plan kitchen. There’s a dining table and bar counter, as well as an open hearth to keep the winter chill at bay. Chuck into the mix a bottle or two of Old Brown, and you'll be cosy as a bedbug.
Throw open the large double doors and head onto the covered deck and outside braai area (bring own wood). Suck up those majestic views over the valley and the Sonderend Mountains cutting the distant horizon.
Whether you’re here for hiking, biking or chilling, Welgedaan ticks the boxes. The couch potats among us can alternate between the deck or curled up with an airport novel in front of the fire.
Hikers and bikers have an endless list of options to tuck into, and there are great gravel road drives you can do from the cottage - ask your host for the details. Plus, McGregor's good spread of eating houses will no doubt lure you in at some point.
All in all, a rustic and cosy looking cottage, well positioned, well priced, and with an outlook second to few.
"We had a great stay at Welgedaan. The view alone is well worth the visit - stupendous in fact. We enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor braai's. Very comfortable couches to read away the day, with ready walking and MTB trails on the doorstep for when you need to get the blood flowing. Worked out well with our two small dogs."

"This was by far one of the best break-aways we ever had. The view, the beautiful house, the hiking trails...No cell phones, no iPad's... just my family, playing games, hiking and spending quality time together. After our three days at Welgedaan Farmhouse our two children decided we will have one day a week where we will not use electricity at our house...only candles. Thank you Bernado for such a great experience. We will see you next year again!"

"Highly recommended! Completely private house in the middle of nowhere with farmer only in contact by phone. Exactly what a city escapee needs. The farmer, Bernardo, was hospitable, friendly and attentive - a great host. The house is well-equipped with some interesting books - it's a pyromaniac eco-bunny armchair intellectual's dream getaway."

"Amazing and exceptional value for money. Off grid with luxuries, away from it all but close enough for everything. Friendly and helpful farmer, leave you totally alone but again, close by and quick response should you need anything. Will definitely go here again - sooner than later."

"Wow, what an amazing experience. If you need to get away for peace and quiet this is the place for you. You have a fantastic view over mountains and fields. They very well equipped with everything. Lovely dcor and very clean. I'm most impressed. My dogs thought they were in heaven with the wild to run in. The only problem was that I only went for the weekend...I could have stayed much much much longer. I would recommend this to everyone."

"Stunning place to unwind and switch off. Had the most amazing weekend away with spectacular views and wonderful nature walks. There is no electricity but that only adds to the ambience. The cottage is well stocked with oil lamps and candles for the evening. There is also a gas fridge and gas stove. Have the fondest memories of sitting on the deck and braaing. If you are needing some time out... I highly recommend this place!"

"Get off the grid! For a dose of sublime tranquility with nothing to distract you but the twittering of birds, Welgedaan Farmhouse is just what the doctor ordered. With three spacious bedroom, three bathrooms, piping hot showers, fluffy towels, funky decor, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and views to sooth your soul, the house has everything you need for a chill out and more. If you're not into chilling, you could party up a storm on the huge deck because the nearest neighbours are about five k's away. The only visitors we had were twelve blue cranes. Pet friendly, human friendly, wildlife friendly and without electricity (work can't follow you there) it is a retreat from the world. Only thing is - your low slung Alfa ain't gonna get up that hill. Need high ground clearance for the rocky ride. Worth the trek up the hill to Rocky Nirvana."

"We had a lovely weekend at Welgedaan Farmhouse. The view from the deck is spectacular and the house is equipped with everything you need. A good night's rest is guaranteed with lovely beds and fresh bedding. The surrounding area offers plenty to do and the house is filled with good books if you just want to relax. The rustic feeling of the farmhouse will remind you of your great grandparents' loving homes. We took our furry friend and he explored the whole day. My family had a lovely time and we will definitely be back! Thank you Bernardo for your kind and helpful hospitality."
