Budget Getaways Review

Sitting on a chilled gravel street in McGregor’s historic centre, what we have at Fountain Place are two rustic Cape cottages with gardens and views towards the surrounding mountains. Looking at some feedback from recent stays, Fountain Place sits right up there with the best of them. "Makes you want to stay longer!", says one. " A great place in the heart of wine country." says another.

Focussing first on Almond Cottage (sleeps 4), this little abode is packed with historic goodness: wonky walls, thatch roof, sash windows and reeded ceilings. Throw in a modern kitchen, light interior, open-living space with fireplace, and farm-style kitchen, you're all set for a most pleasant weekend.

Downstairs you’ll find a double bedroom with ensuite shower and separate bathrrom, while heading up the stairs into the loft, the kids can bunk down in a twin bedroom.

Outside you’ll find a large stoep, which flows onto the lawn and your built-in braai for that balmy summer eve.

Plum Tree Cottage (sleeps 4) has been designed and built to blend right in with McGregor's older buildings, with thatch and whitewash the guiding theme.

Step into the cool interior, you’ll find a double room in the loft and an additional double sleeper couch in the lounge. The kitchen is spacious and open-plan to the lounge, which like its sibling up the road, sports a fireplace. There’s one bathroom with bath and shower, and as with Almond, you have a private stoep with views and a built-in braai.

Now, if bending over a steaming stove doesn’t sound like your cuppa tea, hosts Justin and Linzi can offer you a B&B room in their guesthouse; this is just around the corner from the cottages. Alternatively, McGregor has more than a fair sprinkling of decent restaurants.

To top it all off, both cottages are fenced and pet-friendly - great news for Fido.

Amble into the main street for your morning cuppa, spend the day swerving from one winery to the next, explore the gravel byways on foot or bike (plenty of scope for both), plonk down on the stoep with a good book, a weekend in McGregor is as chilled as they come.
