Budget Getaways Review
Retreat is a pleasant change of gear off the well-trodden road to McGregor.
A fifth-generation peach, apricot, grape and citrus farm that started out making sweepstokke – those long bamboo sticks used by our forefathers to notify the oxen leading way out in front of the wagon to get a move on – it can be found at the far end of a dirt road jutting off the Robertson-to-McGregor tar highway.
The farm offers a private cottage, access to dramatic mountains, long walks and mountain biking (own bike), fresh-water fishing on farm dams, and brilliant value for money.
When it comes to their cottage, owners Louise and Jac and daughter Carmaine have a totally chilled attitude that guests quickly pick up on and return time and again for.
The cottage sits about 30m from the nearest farm building and is surrounded by open views. The interior is simple and unpretentious, livened up here and there with Louise’s personal touch.
The cottage is fully equipped with TV, a microwave, fridge, a mini stove, as well as both fireplace and wood-stove (wood R10 a bag). It sleeps six max and for around R450 a night for the entire cottage, Retreat is a bargain.
A relaxing spot with genuine down-to-earth farm hospitality.
"Nice walks in the orchards and kloofs, well equipped cottage."

"We had a really great break away. Friday will be remembered by us forever - we miss you Gerhard. The dogs loved the place and the venue was clean & cozy. Louise was most hospitable and we will definitely recommend it. The walk up the kloof is an easy walk and the silence gets into your soul. Thanks for providing a really beautiful get away and for being so relaxed and easy going. We wish there were more venues like this within two hours drive from Cape Town."

"My husband and I (with our two large dogs) stayed here with friends at the end of May - what a beautiful surrounding! Many dams to go fishing in and lovely areas to take the dogs for a walk. The cottage has a fireplace which was great, comfortable, cosy and contains everything you need. I wish we could stay longer. They'll see us again soon."

"Retreat effortlessly lived up to it's reputation and our high expectations. The scenery is beautiful and the night sky was breathtaking. We really enjoyed having Rusty and Shelly (the two farm dogs) accompanying us on our walks, and will definitely be back - hopefully soon!"

"Very nice... This was our third time we went and it will not be our last."

"This getaway is a GEM, i can't stop telling everyone what a perfect weekend we had. This cottage is well equipped, the views were unbeatable and the hospitality out of this world. We will be back."

"Everything you need when going away. The setting is stunning, the dog a treat and just the modern touch of a microwave made it so much easier to travel with our 4 month old baby. Louise ons kom weer maar die keer bring ons die 4x4."

"The farm is beautiful and very private. The cottage has lots of character. So much included for so little money. Comfortable and well furnished - it is a steal. The owners are very hospitable. Even their dogs are nice. We were allowed to eat peaches and apricots off the trees! What a treat for city folk. We skinny-dipped in the mountain pool surrounded by magnificent mountains. People and dogs all had a wonderful time. Very safe for family with small kids. Wonderful getaway."
(visited December 2007)
"The cottage was very charming and had everything we could possibly need. All the braaiwood in the world right outside your door and a lovely dog to keep you company. We all had a wonderful time and would go back in a heartbeat!"
(visited September 2007)
"Our stay was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, we couldn't meet the owners, but the setting was perfect and our dogs enjoyed it soooo much, that when we got back to Cape Town, they slept for two days. We cannot wait to go back, and are already planning our next trip."
(visited April 2007)
"Jac and Louise make it their business to make you comfortable. We were invited to join them in watching the Boks lose in July and to pick apricots come November, peaches in December and grapes in January. Our kids love it and we will be back again and again."
(visited August 2006)
"You will go again and again. Just meet the owners first and the rest will follow."
