Budget Getaways Review
Enticingly appointed on a fruit farm in the Koo Valley, in the shadow of the Langeberg mountains, Langdam Guest Farm is a flexible getaway, as it offers a range of different options appealing to a range of personality types: from the home-from-home comfort seeker to the nutty-wheat happy camper.
Kicking off with Pear Tree Cottage, this is a free-standing abode set close to the original 1912 farmhouse. Accommodating four (ideally a young family) in one double bed and two bunks, it's fully equipped with bedding and all kitchenware. An indoor fireplace will keep those tootsies snug and warm in winter, while the outdoor braai is where you'll plant yourself in summer.
Apple Cabin - described as "the cabin with the best view in the Koo." Besides great views it seems a very good option for larger groups as it sleeps eight total in two bedrooms with double beds and two bunk beds for the kids. There's an indoor fireplace, plus gesellig braai area on the large stoep.
Close by and attached to the main house itself are the Apricot (sleeps 2) and Almond Suite (sleeps 5). Both come with own entrance and feature nice views and cosy interiors with comfortable decor and fittings. Apricot is built for the romantically inclined, with a four-poster bed, free-standing bath (with view on the Langeberg) and a fireplace. Almond is bigger, equipped, and also comes packaged with a fireplace.
Recently added to the pack is Guinea Fowl Cottage and Pine Tree Cabin. Guinea Fowl is privately positioned away from the main farm house, and sleeps four in two bedrooms. It comes equipped with treats like a Dover stove in the kitchen and a braai area and large balcony with views over the Koo valley. For those after total seclusion, Pine Tree Cabin (only available in the winter months) is a rustic, open plan abode, tucked away in a pine forest. Downstairs you've got a living area with double bunk beds and an equipped kitchen and Dover stove, while the upstairs loft sleeps a further two people.
Finally, something for our rugged ladies out there: a private camping area set in the adjacent pine forest, with seven dedicated stands serviced by two hot-water showers and a sheltered braai area.
Available to all at Langdam Guest Farm is the Oasis Lapa - a sociable gathering spot with an outlook over the dam, where you can swim, braai and fish (with permit) - as is the rest of the farm, which offers a platter of potential activity - swimming in the solar heated reservoir, walks through the orchards and up into the Langeberg, mountain biking, birdwatching, a tractor ride at nearby Protea Farm, wine tasting etc, etc.
Alternatively, do like the majority of your lazy brethren and just hang out at the lapa with book in one hand and favourite poison in the other.
Pets
Please note - on arrival, there has to be a meet and greet between the 5 farm dogs and your dogs, this is extremely important and needs to be arranged before your arrival.
"We stayed in Apple Cabin, which was beautifully secluded from the other cabins and had a wonderful view of the Koo valley. The cabin was well-equipped (a cheese grater would have been welcome though). Two things spoilt the experience a bit for me - the water temperature of the shower was hard to control, the hot water kept going cold and then very hot again. And the geese for some reason wanted to attack our little girls, rushing at them and hissing. Fortunately I was with them and just stood still with them until the geese went away. But of course they were scared to walk around freely after that. Overall it was a lovely relaxing time and we enjoyed meeting the pigs, emus and tame sheep."

"We had an amazing camping holiday at Langam. The tame farm animals, the sparkling reservoir pool with slide and the awesome farm touch jungle gym kept the kids happy and we loved the walks and endless unspoilt views. There were awesome facilities, including a lapa at the dam for general use, and a Dutch oven in the kitchen area at the camp site. Highly recommended! My only qualm about the camp site is that, at busy times, you might get left with a sloping camp site so book early."

"The cottage that we were in was very cozy. It had all the amenities in there that one would have in your own home. It was quiet, and provided you with a lot of privacy. If you looking for peace and quiet, then this retreat is what you are looking for."

"Had a very relaxing weekend. We were so relaxed we didn't even venture into Montagu. The cottage was well equipped and great value for money. We did a lovely hike and walked around the orchards. The animals were a plus. Glenda and Charles were fantastic hosts - would definitely recommend it."

"Very beautiful setting, with lots to do in the area. Accommodation was neat, clean and lovely. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to get out of the city for a while."

"The cottage I had was a bit small for the family, but we enjoyed it and understand they were busy repairing or building other cottages, which will be bigger for us on our next visit. We were five in a small cottage, best for three I would say. Other than that it was peaceful and relaxing."
