Budget Getaways Review
Four newly renovated cottages nestled in rural surrounds among citrus trees and grape vines, 10 kays from Bonnievale, mountain views, a farm dam for swimming, the river right at hand, enough tranquillity all round, Bakenoord ticks a lot of weekend boxes.
The accommodation is simple and stylish, with all four cottages comfy and well-equipped for self-catering.
Die Kraal 1 and 2 are linked units separated by a communal fire pit. Each sleeps three on single beds and both have their own kitchens.
Onder die Bloekom is well suited to a family, with a Queen bed and two singles. The cottage has a fireplace and outdoor braai area, patio with mountain views, kitchen and shared bathroom.
Die Ou Pomphuis is a two-sleeper tucked away on the river bank. The cottage is open-plan with a Queen bed, fireplace, deck and braai area and soothing views down onto the river.
All the cottages are kitted with bedding and towels and have fans and heaters, depending on the season. Nice touch for a rustic getaway.
Keeping busy at BakenOord is a breeze. There are 13 kays of riverbank to explore, a number of wine farms in and around the area, and of course the reward of hefty sundowners and great views from Bakenkop koppie.
Fresh and new and easy-going, this getaway deserves a spot on Bonnievale's must-do list.

"We had a really great time. We stayed in Kraal 1 and the facilities were as we needed. We went up for the Bonnievale cycle race and it was close to the start of the race and the hostess was very accommodating and waited for us to arrive the Friday evening when we drove up from Cape Town. It's very close to Bonnievale Wines and Van Loveren, so some excellent wine tasting in the area. The only issue we had were mosquitoes which we should have packed more Tabbard / Peaceful Sleep for."
