Budget Getaways Review

Ably managed by local booking agent Mira Weiner, the McGregor Collection comprises an appealing spread of handpicked character cottages that are dotted in and around the village and unified by a common thread of traditional charm (with one or two more modern exceptions).

The Collection offers something for everyone. Most sleep four to six guests, most are pet-friendly, most have fireplaces, all provide linen and towels, some come with swimming pools, all have plenty in the way of cosy appeal and nice touches.

To give you a general taste of what you can expect, herewith a quick overview of each.

Miss Milly Folly: A short walk from the village centre, Miss Milly Folly is an historic thatch cottage sleeping four. Featuring two double bedrooms (one ground floor and one loft room) and double sleeper couch in the living room, the cottage has plenty of charm, with exposed beams, massive fireplace and a nice flat lawn for the kids to frolic on.

Lemon Tree Cottage: Bordering a nature reserve, this little thatch cottage is a good option for couples or a small family. Sleeping four, it has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an equipped kitchen, and an enclosed back garden that will suit Fido just fine.

Bougainvillea Cottage: Lying on the village outskirts, Bougainvillea is a little more contemporary. It's well suited to couples, with a double bedroom and bathroom (with shower). There are extra beds in the living room in case you didn't secure the babysitter. Outside you'll enjoy a spacious garden with swimming pool, and great views. Again, pet-friendly.

91 Long Street: A stylish double-story with plenty of character inside and out, 91 Long sleeps six in three ensuite bedrooms. The house sits on a quiet village street, with relaxing views over a vineyard, olive grove and mountains beyond. Plenty of mod-cons are on hand here, from dishwasher to optional DSTV (extra charges apply). Fido is also welcome to join (by prior arrangement).

The Kite House: A real gem by the looks of it, this is a spacious contemporary abode with screed floors, exposed beams and stack doors zipping open to a generous patio. Kite House has three bedrooms - two of them ensuite and the third with outside shower. The landscaped garden comes with the bonus of a swimming pool but is strictly not pet-friendly.

Lady Grey Walk Cottage: A large and modern home built to Cape Dutch style, Lady Grey Walk is within an easy walk to the village centre. It sleeps six across two doubles, a loft, and a sleeper couch. Outside you’ve got a lawned garden (Fido welcome), and a large patio with braai. Included here is a kids Porter Pool in the garden and family package DSTV.

Plum Tree Cottage: A charactar thatch cottage, Plum Tree sleeps two and has a double bedroom with exposed beams, you’ve got an extra double sleeper couch in the living room for the kids if they're tagging along. The lounge has a cosy fireplace and leads off to a dining area and full equipped kitchen. Out on the patio, there's a built-in braai area spilling onto the garden, with views of the surrounding McGregor countryside.

Ons Huisie: A nice option for couples or a family with two kids, this traditional thatched cottage is set on a tranquil side of the village. The cottage is cozy and compact, with a Queen bedroom with ensuite shower and an extra two single beds on a mezzanine level. The country kitchen doubles up as the dining room, while the clay-tiled lounge area has a cob fireplace. Outside you’ve got a covered patio, braai area, garden and off street parking.

Laurel Cottage: A spacious three bedroomed cottage, sleeping six and within easy reach of the town centre. Laurel is packed with plenty of charm, sash windows with shutters, exposed beams and a living area which opens out onto a large stoep gazingonto an olive grove. The main bedoom is ensuite and opens out onto the stoep, while the two remaining bedrooms are made up of a double and twin. The living area and open-plan kitchen is well equipped and modern, with fireplace and DSTV to keep things cozy.

Francolin Cottage: A country affair in the heart of the village. The two-bedroom-two-bathroom is airy and open with a spacious family kitchen that leads onto an outside stoep with a gas braai. The large garden sports a cosy little flat with double en-suite room, kitchenette and lounge. This seems like a good spot to bring the kids and the four-legged family memebers.

Like we said, there's something for everyone here. Best you allow Mira to guide you in your final selection.

Guest Reviews

"Richard and I had a fantastic time at Plum Tree this weekend and we will definitely use your establishment again. From the website pictures to physically being there, I can honestly say I was wowed by the gorgeous cottage which was fully equipped and neatly presented. I loved that it was secluded with breath taking views and the tranquility and setting was superb."

"My husband and I spent three nights in Ons Huisie and really loved our stay. There's no cell reception, no tv and no internet, so simply perfect when you want to get back to sitting by fire reading or talking. The only negative was that there wasn't enough hot water for more than one person to bath or shower at the time."

Hi Simona, thank you for your feedback. We have fixed the geyser settings and the hot water now works perfectly. We do hope you come and visit McGregor again, perhaps in another cottage to try something different? Warm country regards

"We stayed at Tumbleweed Cottage in Mc Gregor for 3 nights which was completely fantastic. Great location, and impeccably clean lovely house.Very tastefully appointed, great beds, wonderful linen and duvets, lovely thoughtful touches like lots of candles and a great Nespesso coffee machine. Would have loved to stay longer. We then moved to Ons Huisie which was a much smaller compact and "rustic" accommodation, very basic and very worn. Rustic is fine, but the cottage was grubby, dated and decorated with very little charm. A total disappointment."

Hi Odette, thank you for your review on Tumbleweed Cottage and Ons Huisie. I am sorry that Ons Huisie wasn't up to your standards and I will speak to the owners about updating the cottage a bit. I hope to welcome you back to the village in the future. Warm country regards.

"We booked Tindall Cottage in McGregor for ourselves and another couple to attend a friend's wedding. The accommodation is great value for money, clean and modern. It had all the necessities for a nice stay, even mosquito repellent (for the pesky mozzies) and a bottle of complimentary red and white wine on arrival. The town is lovely, small, rural and safe to wander around with quaint restaurants and arty little shops."

"We stayed in two cottages, Tumbleweed and Lemon Tree. Tumbleweed is glorious, a thick walled barn of a place with large well-furnished bedrooms and a comfortable sitting area. Upstairs is a lovely attic room which extends the length of the original house. The splash pool was more than enough for us with a lovely seating area nearby. Lemon Tree is very pretty with a lovely treed garden and braai area. It's cosy inside with comfortable beds. Unfortunately no mosquito nets so we and our baby got bitten a lot even with repellent on, we asked for a fan but it only arrived on the last night, and the area was very noisy."

"We stayed at Tindall cottage and we were a bit disappointed with the service we received. We arrived on Friday night at the discussed meeting time and I tried phoning before arriving as arranged but no answer. We waited nearly an hour before going to ask around at the local market how else we can get hold of her and eventually found her at the market to open for us, not nice when one just wants to rests after a long drive. The house is nice and central and was neat upon arrival so that was good."

"We stayed in the Lemon Cottage, very cosy and clean. Our stay was warm with the heater and electric blankets provided. Our four furry children love running around the back garden. Felt very relaxed coming home, scenery in McGregor is lovely. Definitely will visit again and recommend to family and friends."

"Relaxing, quaint little cottage in the country with barely any cellphone reception. Perfect for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city. With many wine farms and alike surrounding the town, there is plenty to do (or not to do) during your stay. I recommend Tindall cottage for a peaceful getaway in McGregor where life seems simple and the worries of the world seem to fade."

"We enjoyed staying at Miss Milly Folly. We liked the fact that it's old and pretty, with a nice little garden and a well-equipped kitchen. It even has good pillows, which is very unusual for any getaway (in my experience). It's at the edge of the village, with a short walk up to the coffee shops and restaurants, and for a wander around McGregor's lovely streets. There's good coffee and ice cream at The Frangipani, by the way! We had one reservation, which is that the cottage is on the livelier edge of the town. It's not big-city noise, but there is some noise from cars coming into town, as well as late-night music from the neighbours' house on the weekend we were there. It's not raucous or unpleasant noise, just people chatting and having a good time, but it's worth knowing that the cottage feels like it's in a lively small town, not like it's out in the middle of silent nature."

"We were comfortable and enjoyed our stay, although we did battle slightly with the blinds in the lounge!"

"Ons verblyf by 91 Long street was heerlik! Die gastehuis spreek van kwaliteit en goeie smaak. Ek kan dit met groot vrymoedigheid aanbeveel."

"A warm welcome to a pretty, cozy cottage with all facilities one could ask for. Only drawback is that it is not closer to the centre of town."

"We enjoyed our stay at Lemon Tree Cottage, we brought our dogs and it was really nice that the garden was enclosed and safe for them. The house was cozy and had everything that we needed, near enough to walk to town, but far away enough to have a quiet evening under the stars. The only complaint could be that we did not realise we had to buy all our supplies at Robertson, because the shops did not really cater for overnight visitors (we had to buy expensive and not good quality fire-wood). Overall the few days was lovely and we could walk all over town and on some of the mountain tracks on our own. We will be back."

"Hi Thea, thank you for your lovely feedback given above. I would be more than happy to organize fire wood for you in the future when you come and stay again. We can even get it delivered to your door! Hope to see you in McGregor soon."

(Mira Weiner)

"We had a lovely stay in a lovely town. The stoep was ideal for a braai."

"Overall a lovely place although some maintenance is needed here and there for instance one of the chairs were broken. Braais were dirty when we got there."
