Budget Getaways Review
Situated on a wine farm 17km from Bonnievale (and 34km from Robertson) Night Sky offers the hardy weekender a nicely laid out campsite and six Wendyhouse-style timber chalets, both arranged around a pretty farm dam and backdropped by the Riviersonderend and Langeberg mountains.
With most eyes pointing towards the dam this is a good option for nervous parents, who would like their children to have fun in the water but without the constant nail-biting worry. The campsite is open to both tents and caravans, and as far as camping goes it's a comfortable experience, with grass-covered sites, 24 power points, braai spots and clean ablutions.
For a little more comfort, Night Sky's cabins are the way to go. Although we haven't yet seen them firsthand, they appear to be fairly basic affairs, but with all the essentials, including fireplaces in the larger units. Basically the bigger the chalet you book, the more home comforts and better appointment you can expect. What you shouldn't expect though is much in the way of privacy as the chalets and the happy campers lie cheek by jowl, especially when things get busy.
Turning to the activities, the dam seems to be the main focus. Apart from swimming and fishing for black bass, canoes are available. If the campsite starts feeling a little too intimate there is the option of taking a walk in the veld or through the vineyards, bird-watching (45 species ticked to date) and racing around on your mountain bike.
Bottomline: if you are looking for a sociable venue where your kids can have a lot of fun, Night Sky appears to be a good call.
"Nigh Sky Caravan Farm is een van die oulikste kampplekke wat ek in 'n lang tyd ontdek het - dit is skoon, netjies, stil en weggesteek van alles en almal. Ons het geswem, gekanoe en visarende gesien. Of jy nou in 'n tent daar bly of in een van die houthuisies - dit is groot pret! Ons gaan beslis weer."

"A lovely little gem. It was our first time "camping" and loved the relaxed and family-oriented atmosphere. All the campers were so friendly and our kids had visitors within 20 mins of arriving. We stayed in a cabin and absolutely loved it. The views, the tranquility, the peace...an amazing getaway from the city. We can't wait to go back."

"Wow, what a beautiful place! Clean and so peaceful, with lots to see and do. There was never a dull moment. I saw lots of interesting animals... on my last day I found a frog in my cooler bag and a rain spider on the painting I had let Natalie from "Natalies in Bonnievale" do for me. I would go back tomorrow if I could."

"It was great to be so close to nature yet have all the basic comforts of home. We just love the idea of mixing cabins in between the camping area and the choice of how much luxury you want to add to your outdoor experience. For the aspiring campers out there it's a great place to get started. You'll soon be hooked to the great outdoors. My favourite was the view from couch in the lounge - it was peace to my soul. It's a definite return venue."

"This is great for a weekend break, or value for money year-end holiday. Bonnievale Town is about 15-20 mins away if you run short of anything. The most amazing place for star gazing. It was awe inspiring!"

"The Night Sky Caravan Farm was such an awesome experience. It was beautiful, clean, has the most extraordinary view and it so peaceful. The cottage we were in was absolutely magnificent. We were short of absolutely nothing. It was my first time camping alone with my kids, and this was really the best experience ever. On arrival we received such friendly and loving reception from Gesina. She really accommodated us with the best. I have already bragged to all of my friends about this amazing paradise and I'm definitely going back there soon!"

"I have been coming here with my family for years and this year decided to make the trip on my own. I thoroughly enjoyed the complete silence, fresh air, being able to see all the stars at night and I even got to photograph a Fish Eagle. Definitely recommend! Wonderful value for money and excellent owners."

"Wow! What a lovely place. We had such a lovely long weekend here and our kids just played from the moment they woke up till they eventually collapsed in the evening. Many hours of fun was spent on the dam. A really amazing safe place for families and we will definitely be going back. If you go in Winter or anytime from now on I would really recommend taking lots of blankets and warms clothes, while the days are still warm the nights were freezing!"

"Lovely camp site. Great ablutions. Plastic kayaks provided lots of fun. Nice farm roads to ride and run on."
(Kim Murphy Bellairs , visited Feb 2016)
"This was honestly one of the nicest camp sites I have ever stayed at. It has an amazing layout, the sites all face the water, there is lots of grass and shade. We have small children, so it meant we could relax and watch them in the water. The site has a number of canoes and paddles which the kids and adults enjoyed. The ablutions blocks were good. There were great braai facilities. There were a number of walks/runs and cycle paths to explore. The stars in the night sky were incredible, hence the name of the camp site. Gesina was friendly and accommodating of our requests. I would definitely go there again!"

"Wat n wonderlike plekkie om wegtebreek van die stad se geraas, was heerlik, geen selfoon opvangs so net jy en die natuur. Heerlik vis gevang, baie visse in die dam, lekker kanoe gery en dan natuurlik die lekker braai op die deck. Met die maanlig oor die dam, selfde in die oggende met die mooi sonsopkoms. Baie lekker plek om net bietjie stil te word. Baie dankie tannie Gesina en span."

"I've taken the wife and kids to many different places in the past but there was always something that was not right with the places and this time we expected the same. This however was not the case. when you plan on going away having a braai with the family and just taking some time out "Nights Sky Caravan Farm" is the best place to go and chill. On the water jetty's and clean ground, believe it or not even mowed lawns this is the place. This was the best time away sins my honey moon and would most definitely go back. I would rate this place x10 stars. Go for a walk in Bonnievale and enjoy craft shops, restaurants and even antique cars and furniture. there was more than enough to do at night sky and surrounds. Thanks Night sky, we will see you again in 2016."
(Bennie van Dyk, visited January 2015)
"Was a fantastic place, wish Monday was a holiday so we could have stayed longer. Only issue we had was water pressure other wise all was well. Things to bring in winter include a heater and lots of wood, Bird life was amazing, forgot fishing rods but there is black mouth bass and blue gill in the dam. And watch for the cat, they like to steal food. We bought a bag of cat food which sorted that problem out quickly. Other than that enjoy the sunset and the peace and quiet."

"It was a most enjoyable stay and we really got to relax and just have some well needed time off. It is now my new favorite place to go and chill."

"My wife Lynnette, friend Auke Slotegraaf and I have just hosted the 9th Southern Star Party since 2011 at Night Sky Caravan Farm. We are going to host the 10th one there in November 2015. It is the sort of place you just have to keep on going back to and Gesina is the the "best in the West"as far as hosts go. Night Sky is also one of the darkest venues within easy driving distance of Cape Town for astronomy enthusiasts and certainly the most affordable one."

"We had a ball of a time. The bathroom facilities could have been a little bit cleaner BUT its a budget getaway so we where happy. We camped right opposite the ablution block and under a nice big tree. We will definitely be going back."
(Sanet van Rhyn, visited January 2015)
"We had an excellent four days there in January. The dam provides great entertainment for swimming, fishing (bass fishing is fabulous) and readily accessible good quality two man and one man kayaks. The surrounds are rugged and provide some good mountain-biking. While cycling you may see resident blue cranes, mountain Reedbuck and many other animal species. It was really hot in the middle of the day, so choose a spot that gets afternoon sun. Some good wine tasting spots are nearby, which are great to visit in the middle of the day and to return to the awesome moon-rise over the dam in purple-pink sky."

"Love this place! We spend many holidays camping at Night Sky. Best place ever. Great rates and great hospitality by the owners. Excellent place to just get away from it all especially for small children. Ideal place for a family weekend away."

"We were very fortunate that one of the cabins on the water opened up last minute and that Gasina bumped up our stay to this cottage at no extra cost. We were grateful and had a wonderful time all together. Beautiful setting, cozy chalets and greaat value for money. Thank you so much Night Sky for making our weekend so special. We loved it! We told our entire family about this hidden gem and will bring everyone next time. Absolute bargain. "

"The first time we camped at Night Sky was December 1999... We have been doing so since then! December 2007/08 has been our 9th year... Four weeks were too short! Jurie and Gesina, we are proud of you. A better place to relax and unwind we will never find. The children can run around and play outside till late and it is very, very safe...! Everything at Night Sky is special, from the clean and quiet campsite, to the best wines. You must try Langverwacht Shiraz 2004 if visiting! Don't even consider going there, just go...!"

"Part of me wants to say that this is a terrible place... just to keep the rest of you away... but a gem like this is worth sharing. Easy to get to, great value and a great place to get away and forget."
