Budget Getaways Review
Not far from your host's house and tucked into a lush garden setting on a working fruit farm 10km from Robertson, Die Kraaltjie is a character cottage suitably geared for a family of four to six.
So whether you’re heading to the area for one of the valley’s famous wine festivals (Wacky Wine, Hands on Harvest, The Robertson Slow) or just planning a lizard-like weekend, there’s ample reason to pull a cork and slot into general Breede River Valley vibe.
Decorated in light tones and ample country charm, the cottage has a double ensuite, a twin bedroom, and an additional two beds in the lounge for the expanded brood.
Living and kitchen area are open-plan and equipped with indoor braai, dining table and simple yet comfy furnishings.
Double doors swing open to a covered stoep, which in turn spills onto a flat lawn and a jungle gym for the kids.
Firewood, towels and crisp white linen are provided, as is five litres of drinking water - bring more if you need, as the river water is not potable.
Time ticks slowly in this neck of the woods, though there is heaps to do: Easing into the day with a gentle farm stroll along the Breede; heading over later to neighbouring Viljoensdrift for a river cruise; popping into a wine farm or two (eg Van Loveren); driving into Roberston for a decent coffee and slap-up meal.
Enough said, let’s give the last word to a satisfied guest: “A quaint, quirky, comfortable cottage, very well equipped.”
"We parked the car on Friday and only got back in on Sunday, feeling refreshed. Slept late, lazy walks around the farm. Swam in the Breede River, read books. Switched off. It's walking distance to van Loveren for lunch, which we did. It was hot outside, but the rustic cottage was nice and cool inside. Only con is that it's a bit near the road, but a awesome weekend."
